I was sitting drinking coffee
Talking to a friend
When they came in,
A couple of a certain age.
He pushed open the door
And walked through,
The door started to shut
And she had to push the door.
Why did he not hold the door open,
Surely it is polite to do so,
But no he showed no respect.
I was aghast at this,
Has respect and politeness left this world.
I hold the door open for many,
Like that time I was walking to a door,
A lady was behind me,
I opened the door for her
She looked at me and said,
“You don’t have to hold the door open
Because I am a woman!”
I replied “I am not doing that,
I am doing it because I am a gentleman”
Where has politeness and respect gone?
It means so much to many,
But is that nowadays
People do not care!

Sadly this rudeness isn't restricted to any age group - good write Andy.
Very true Michael - such a shame.
Andy
good for you Andy .. one could not agree more sir .. I hope his beard grows backwards and chokes him ..
I'm glad you replied to the woman, or you may have felt embarrassed (though no need to).
Bit like saying to someone 'Hello'. They reply 'Hello? What do you mean hello. I will punch you on the nose for saying that' Doh!
I said in a mad moment: 'Cheer up; if one door closes, another one will slam in your face. What more could one want?!'
Perfectly expressed this rant against thoughtlessness dear Andy - - like this verse states I too hope the day comes when politeness and respect return.
It’s a serious matter
Days have changed
Behaviour too
Surrounded by so many ideologies
To hold the door
Or not
Both considered rude
Gentleness has disappeared
Maybe that’s why people have changed
Humanity seems lost
So when one cares we inspire of being thankful
Turn rude
I wish we could be thankful to those around and appreciate it too
So that others can be thankful and humble too
It’s kind to open a door
It’s kind to talk softly
And hear patiently
But in our rush we forgot what manners means to us
The best rejoinder possible! However, many a gentleman has consciously dropped such gentlemanly manners simply because of the rebuffs he has received.
but wouldn't the rough edges be again smoothed if more polite behavior was the norm.
its all lost in the: 'meaning'...
we are seeing the consequences f this college brainwashed
'free spirited' keyboard warriors
acting-out
their 'online persona's, in real life';
see, all those disgruntled educators and lecturers
who found their position in society side-lined and deemed worthless, by the stifled size of their wage packets, notion of worth
are venting
their anger,
and using our very own children,
by warping their mind's and societal values
to retaliate with...
and so we have two or three generations
mingling into the world, awaiting to inherit the world
with that mindset, where
'victimhood' is the prevailing identity,
they adhere to, over everything
and the notion of 'merit' being 'cancelled' for that self-serving
'I'm just doing, what feels right to me' attitude, to life
where consequence has no value
because
life - itself has been
'nihilistically, corrupted: into being deemed: valueless...'
(So no, my friend
its not you, but sadly
unlike you
some of us, have been conditioned
by our experience
to judge and calculate
'who'
we open those doors for
and who, we assume
will hate us for re-introducing
that archaic notion
of gentlemanly: virtue
back into their
'concussed' awareness and values...
(good rant, my friend
well articulated!)
All civility is disappearing. Mankind is regressing to barbaric times. I blame the wars of the twentieth century and the gross barbarism encountered there. People have been de-humanized by what they have seen . It is now all about the self.
Nice rant Andy. Right on target! - Phil A.
I see the same thing here in the US Andy. Lots of times the younger generation do it because they enjoy annoying the older generation. They know the we were brought up on earning and having respect for others. And that annoys them, so they set out to annoy us. And like Robert, I too despise people who throw their rubbish on the ground rather than in a trash barrel where it belongs. 100% agree with you Andy. 😒
