Once.
Once upon a gone era when
minds were carefree
and green fields were high
with adventure our
heedless heads we stuffed
with daydreaming
dares as running through
time's chance to test
childhood ideals we loved
excitement and
by sharing our pleasures
*
*
by trailing daisy-twines or
flying kites, taking
home tiddlers in jam jars
we sought barefoot
glimpsing Eden so feared
nothing and thought
only in moments of seeing
gold in each buttercup.
Joy was for taking once upon
a gone age made
of young laughter bound with
wonderment's action
before life shackled innocence
with adulthood chains.

My Dear Fay,
This gem of a poem reminded me of my beautiful childhood in Italy…especially the years I lived with my nonna(grandmother).
Love the last two lines…they ‘speak’ the truth.
Thank you for sharing.

Delighted the read took you back dear Laura -- nothing like memories of happy childhood. Thank you for sharing your own experience in this comment

This verse has been waiting to post for a while but it seems we were on the same wave today with similar reflective subjects - -- naught can touch those special times eh ...............x
Oh for those sunshine days of childhood lost.... a longing refreshed in your wonderfully crafted joyride poetry today..... where did the zest and energy go, the excitement of being entertained by fresh adventures each new day.
Thoroughly enjoyed this and want to read many times again, so into my fav's it goes... thank you Fay.
Mu pleasure and honour to know you enjoyed my take on long-ago days enough to read it over again - thank you for your visit to my few lines today dear Dusk - -
That innocence and glory of childhood is so wonderful Fay, it is a shame we have to grow up.
