Pub Folk

AuburnScribbler

Why choose pub folk?

I’ll tell you why,

for in the right places,

they’ll laugh and cry,

when you pour out,

your drink and your plight,

depending on your mood,

they’ll both help and fight,

but at least some company

you will have indeed,

to rub misery away,

they’ll make you happy,

to be, to drink, to belong,

in a merry smelly crowd,

chanting is in session,

they’ll sing your song!

I feel for those who don’t,

venture into a Red Lion,

maybe their family is enough,

but I’m sure they may be lying,

for the same four walls,

can tear at your sanity,

so, why not come out,

live your life to full capacity,

if you’re a tee-totaller,

then we’ll won’t tease,

toast with us; with coffee,

if your heart does; please,

but, through and through,

our family will not provoke,

so, sit with us, and be proud,

to be one with pub folk!

  • Comment from author about the poem: I am British; thus, I live up to some British stereotypes, one such globally known stereotype, is being a member of “pub folk!” I love the pub, and not just because it’s where I can get a good drink, but also because of its warmth and community, especially when there are those who are lonely, who are looking for friendly conversation. Accompanying the poem is a very arty image from iStock by Getty Images, which encapsulates the poem splendidly. I hope that you enjoy the poem, if you are a fellow of the “pub folk” then I raise my glass to you, and as always, please do stay safe everyone.

My British friends brought us to a pub when we were in London and outside London. The atmosphere was great and the people were so friendly. Very nice reading about this traditional institution again.

Such true words Ben, strangely before reading this I have written a poem about the same subject but of many years ago.
Yes those "pub folk" were always such great times.

Cheers, prost, from one bar fly to another. Some of my closest, dearest friends were met in a local bar.

                • AuburnScribbler

Thanks for the read Draven, and it's very true, a fair number of my friends I have also met at the pub, they are really great places to make good connections with people, and I'm glad that you are a fellow pub folk member. To your health!
