What If......?

Goldfinch60

What if?

The most unanswered question ever asked.

I look back on my life,

So full of what ifs.

Each one would have taken my life

Along a different path,

And I often wonder where I would be

If I had taken one of those paths.

The one that is overwhelming

Is what if I had remained in my first place of work

Instead of trying to save a relationship that failed,

How high up the scientific chain would I have climbed?

But then looking back

If I had taken any of those paths

I would not have met her,

Met the love of my life,

Which brough so much joy,

So much joy to me

In our so many married years.

Yes we ask what if,

But to me they are not relevant,

As my life was filled with love

And that love will continue

So that when that day happens

We will be together once more

And there will be no more

What ifs.

I spent my life with 'but for' and 'what if' but this was in my professional life when considering legal allegations against the NHS and staff - in my private life I don't give them thought at all. I'm with you all the way Andy.

    • Goldfinch60

Yes I too was like that with most f my what ifs Michael. There are none around any more as I know I am in the right place in my life.

      Dear Andy
Your poetry positive , warm and so touching
You show what dilemmas we carry yet so simply you give the solutions
We always question the what if
And to those what ifs I didn’t have reply
But reading yours, it makes me realise there is no regret if I didn’t take that path
Thank you so much dear Andy
I always feel so inspired and relaxed after reading the beautiful lines

You are most kind spilleronsheet, we look back at those what ifs but realise we did not do them and have come to the place we are without them. I am sure that you too are in a good place in your life as I am.

        A good write Gold.
My 'What if' has an answer.
Q: What if I want to sing?
A: Go over the hills and very far away! lol.

        • Goldfinch60

So true Orchi but the other what if is "What if you can sing as well as Pavarotti?"

Totally agree, what if ,is just a waste of thinking. It probably sends people insane. Though, I could have been a contender.

          • Goldfinch60

Yes you could have been a contender Paul but that what if moment has now passed. LOL

            Thank you for your comment.

            simply beautiful, Andy
            and I totally agree
although, it's hard for us to see
            when travelling, through
those bleak corridor's, of what must-be
            before we land
at that oasis, of our awaiting: destiny...

Thank you for your kind words Mek, much appreciated.

We've all played the what iff's game a lot. I think as we get older it's a fun passtime and we can enjoy daydreaming over the possible outcomes whether they be blissful or catastrophic. But, just like you state, I wouldn't change much (with one exception, my daughters mental and physical wellbeing) because life has brought me to here. A place i am content to be.

                • Goldfinch60

So true d a, I am also happy where I am in my life, with one obvious regret, but all is well.

                  Andy
