The Father of Me

Accidental Poet

So cherished grow the years

When looked back upon

Little had I known then

How soon they’d be gone

The memories not lived

The dreams not shared

So too the love between us

That was always there

But were I to go back

And relive younger days

To spend more time with you

Somehow, someway

If I could tell my younger self

To look deeper into your eyes

See the love there within

And how hard you tried

To employ your influence

And not be so shy

To excel in sports

Tap into your pride

For I am but a shadow

Of who I wanted to be

To be more like you

The Father of me

AP, I love this poem. Reminds me of my years as a father of three. I particularly like the last stanza:

For I am but a shadow
Of who I wanted to be
    To be more like you
    The Father of me

    Well written and nostalgic.

We all have regrets. But great memories too. As the child or the parent. Lovely lines.

Very true Rozina. Thank you. 😊

When I look in the mirror sometimes I see my father looking at me, the memories of the times we had together were sublime.

I suspect the same when I look in the mirror too Andy. Thanks 😉

Thank you, my Dad never knew that I write poetry. But I'm sure he knows now. 😊

Most poets are hidden like pearls in ocean
              Often unnoticed by the world
Even by the ocean that nurtures it whole time

So sorry you lost your dad ! He's in a better place, now!

              • Accidental Poet

Thank you Devilove, my last words to him were, "We're not going to say good-bye dad, just that we'll see you later, we love you".
