The Street Sweeper

Rozina

He comes from foreign lands

To make his fortune here

But little did he know

He had much more to fear

From men that he believed

Would help him on his way

They took all that he owned

No money or place to stay

A kind Samaritan

Found him in tears one day

Called all the friends he knew

For jobs that they would pay

And now he sweeps the streets

Every day around our place

His head is held up high

A smile upon his face

It's Chinese New Year time

He wears a bright new jacket

All the residents here

Give him a full red packet

I see him as I walk

For my papers up the street

We smile and wave together

"Good morning" we both greet.

Foreign workers were tricked by unscrupulous men when they left their homes and families to earn a better income in other countries including here. Our street sweeper was lucky to have met a kind gentleman who was able to help him. Others are not so fortunate.

The exact scenario you describe in your first two stanzas exists everywhere Rozina, as you are fully aware. Dangerous unsafe working conditions, paid a pittance for men. Same for women with various kinds of sexual slavery an additional element. Nowhere is free of it, with very few happy endings.
    Your footnote says it all.

  • Rozina

Very true. By humans to humans. Thank you for your comments.

The trafficking of slave labour is still rife. Especially for young women/girls.
Your piece brings us to think about this unpopular subject for it is something we should be ashamed of to play host to albeit in ignorance. We could do more.

    • Rozina

Yes we should. It is also due to supply and demand. Education and awareness must be ramped up from young, increase penalties for human trafficking, it has to be a global effort. Thank you for your comments.

He is now much more comfortable and seems happy. He’s very hard working. Thank you for your comments.

Not a lot changes in the world,.Britain is rife with people duped into coming in with promises.

    • Rozina

I read of the deaths of Vietnamese people in a trailer and women from Eastern Europe promised riches in UK. It’s terrible that all over the world this inhumanity continues. Thank you for your comments.

It happens so often but sometimes there are kind people who put a smile on others faces with the kindness they give.

It is wonderful to have these kind souls who give us hope that life is generally good. Thank you Andy.

A very heartwarming poem here Rozina, with a flawless rhythm and rhyme.

I'm glad that there was a happy ending to it, as such a prolonged sense of division and dissatisfaction brought on by the frustrating way humanity operates, is just plain stupid in my opinion.

        So, here's to the Sweeper!

Bravo, and I hope that all is well!

unfortunately, the point you make here & so very well can be seen throughout the world .. I applaud the way you have incorporated this fact throughout .. it may not create the mass awareness the issue deserves, but hey, Rome wasn't built in a day, was it .... Neville

            True. Thank you Neville.
