My Eyes Are Closed

Bella Shepard

My eyes are closed

They think I sleep

But in my head

My thoughts I keep

Thoughts and memories

So rich, so sweet

When in my youth

They were complete

But now the fragments

With such finesse

Begin to form

And coalesce

Because of age

I now have time

To drift and think

To render sublime

The love, the life

That was my own

The hard and sad

I do not bemoan

But understand

At this late age

What I have learned

Upon my stage

I held the reins

I steered my course

I cannot blame

For my remorse

It taught me well

I’ve sense to see

That the truth of life

Was there in me

  • Comment from author about the poem: Once a week I get to spend time visiting with residents of a nursing home. I often see the very aged sitting in the day room, eyes closed, and I have wondered if they are just asleep, or if that light stage of dozing opens doors to memories of the past. Here's to my folks.

Thank you so much dear Teddy. You have no idea how much that means to me. I am fortunate to be inspired by so many wonderful, talented people on this site.

That was a wonderful well written poem. I myself am a nurse who works with the geriatric population and this is so relatable. Great job!

  • Bella Shepard

You know exactly what I mean. I worked with geriatric patients as a COTA for a number of years, and I have the utmost respect for the nurses who care for them. They not only provide excellent medical care, but emotional care as well. They are a very special population. Thank you for your kind comments.

Wonderful words Bella and probably very true, my wife was in a care home before she passed and I used to see the residents like this as well.

Brilliantly written here Bella, the rhythm and rhyme are masterful, and the poem tells me that you are indeed a strong character.

So inspirational! Yes, you and you alone are enough. I love this evolution you took me through and you really explained yourself very well!

            • Bella Shepard

Thank you dear Rocky for your kind words. I like to think that we come to a time eventually where we clearly see how the life we've lived took shape, and shaped us. Impossible sometimes to see while you're living it. I'm new to poetry, only started writing a few things about 4 years ago after a creative writing class, so I truly appreciate the inspiration you provide every time I read your poems. I also appreciate the acceptance, and feel I've found someplace that I can belong.

Life sure is a fleeting moment, and sometimes when we have too much time we start to reminisce, though I suppose when time is all we have, those thoughts must be amplified every day.

              • Bella Shepard

Thank you Paul for your thoughtful comments.

Well, I'm not that old and I go back to my memories and think. They provide me with great insight. Now, there are others I'd like to displaced, but they're there forever. Nicely done. Well structured. Bravo!

                • Bella Shepard

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I know we all have our moments of reflection on our past lives, but I find the older I get the more precious they become.

                  • rrodriguez

                    Indeed!

                  • sorenbarrett

Bella it's like that old Frank Sinatra song "I did it my way". Very well written and worded.
