The Spatula Can Support... or Slaughter (Haiku/Senryū #4)

Rocky Lagou

Sometimes, succulent,

Sizzling, sea-salted steaks...

Sit still – seared stoic.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is just a little culinary metaphor for how a person's upbringing can lead them to success or stasis in fear. Oftentimes, when one is brought up from strict and tough parents, they grow to be apathetic or depressive because of the sternness during their childhood. So, the "spatula" in this case can be seen as the parent, and the meat is literally us (flesh.) 🥩

This is absolutely wonderful--so deep for a Haiku/Senryu. I actually thought the spatula was meant to hurt but as you say, it's the parent. Sometimes we're succulent--well reared and others "scared stoic". Great piece of work Rocky, keep it up!

Hi! I'm glad you enjoyed the little poem for today. I wanted to express the idea of upbringing in a creative way, and I actually had that line "sizzling, sea-salted steak" already saved in my poetry Word doc for more than like 6 months or so. Sometimes I think of ideas for a poem starter and quickly write it down, and now is the time I finally utilized that one. I also applied strict sibilance (the "s" at the beginning of every word) to hint at that strict parent that does the opposite of nurture. I just hope for a day where each child can be raised in a supportive family. Thanks a bunch for the comment, have a marvelous day!

      Parents, who would have them.
I suppose, though, you do get to pick their care homes. You can see why kids divorce their parents now.

      • Rocky Lagou

Hehe. Wow that was a perfect way to put it: "Kids divorcing their parents." Honestly though, growing up in a dysfunctional family is quite hectic. I know many who would agree, we can only try to make the best of what we've been handed. Thanks for the reply and have a great day!

I think one of the greatest songs about the relationship of parents and their children is Cats In The Cradle by Harry Chapin. Great write Rocky🍻👏🕊🌞

Thanks a bunch! I really appreciate your input. I'll surely consider listening to the suggestion. Family can get so complicating, but a good family is one that is always there for you. Have a lovely day!

I guess it’s more about father and son relationship more than family, but family too. It’s definitely worth a listen too if you’ve never heard it. Cheers🍻happy listening🎼

I heard a discussion recently on our Public Radio about gentle parenting. I wonder where that would fit in. Maybe a cake server instead of spatula. Short but sweet!

            • Rocky Lagou

Yes, indeed. Parenting is definitely nothing easy, but I feel that parents should at least try to take it gentle with their children. Of course, misconduct is a big "no-no" and rightfully deserves punishment, but I feel some parents just take it too far. Family is a balancing act. Thanks, as always, for the kind comment. Have a wonderful day!

              Wonder in her senyru
              I witnessed childhood of many
              In her senyru
              I found advice
That spoke of kid and parents teaching in life
              So well crafted dear Rocky

              • Rocky Lagou

Thanks a bunch Spiller! Family is quite a touchy subject and it can get messy, so I wanted to be short and straightforward with this one. It's really nice to see you liked it. Sometimes we're "succulent" and "sizzling" and just ready to become something revolutionary, but it's cut short from a parental "sear" which makes us "stoic" and fearful. Have a lovely day!

                Good write R.

Thanks Orchi! Your comments are always appreciated! Just a little fun one today, which touches on something pretty deep.

I admit sometimes I don't always get the theme of more cryptic-type poems. Then I put a usual 'good write/fine write, etc' comment, to show I've looked in at least! 🙂

i read it and enjoyed for what it is - then I read your description of it and it took on a new meaning - either way a gem of a write.

                    • Rocky Lagou

That's what I admire about poetry, it's all about the perspective one views it through. Your words mean so much to me, this poem, although seemingly innocent because of the analogy I use, really holds a lot of weight in its meaning. Have a great day!

Yes you are right. Often we get it wrong sometimes we get it right. But being a parent was harder than any exam I ever sat.

Hiya! Thanks for your review! Parenting is truly quite a difficult task, but I just wish each parent could learn to be more tactful with their children. At the end of the day, it could make or break them. Thanks again, have a wonderful day!

Rocky this piece of work goes way beyond. So many elements incorporated in one Haiku is unusual. Alliteration, philosophical, metaphor, maintaining a single theme, meter, Wow!!! Impressive.

Hello! This comment is so fervent I feel undeserving of it. Thanks so so much. I always try to punch my poems with as much as I can, so to see you felt what I was going for truly means a lot. Have a lovely day!

nice way to build up an appetite and in no time at all ................... Z 🙂

Hehe. It is pretty punched with imagery. Hope there ain't no vegans reading.
