Afternoon Tea

Bella Shepard

I invited a bird to afternoon tea,

And she accepted most graciously

I’d love to my dear, sip tea with you here

In the shade of this beautiful tree

So upon the table I did place

A cloth of damask and finest lace

Wedgewood china would be the best

For this unusual, and special guest

A fork and spoon placed just here

And a butter knife with which to smear

The clotted cream that is so tasty

Upon a delicious form of pastry

A silver tea stand will display

A host of delicacies in wide array

Placed upon each tier with care

To tempt with such delicious fare

A knitted cozy on the Denby pot

Will keep the Earl Grey nice and hot

“One lump or two” I shall ask

“And would you like milk first or last”

My guest arrived at three o’clock

In a lovely feathered hat and frock

So delicately did it seem to fit

I thought at first I’d imagined it

The afternoon passed so pleasantly

As we sipped and chatted most amiably

And when the time had come to go

She said “My dear, I’ll miss you so”

And as I mused in this fanciful way

On all that came into my head that day

I thought to myself, well just for a lark

Next time, I think I’ll invite an aardvark

  • Comment from author about the poem: Last Christmas my son gave me a bird feeder that he had made out of a china teacup and saucer. I put it out this spring and it was a hit with the birds. I thought about this poem as I sat and watched them perch and feed.

I love when the muse transports the writer into little fantasies. This right here is such a fun and colorful tale. I enjoyed your approach and your words tell a story divine!

A wonderful tale or tail. Anthropomorphism is underrated, I always loved parables and fables. You have a wonderful way of telling them in such nice rhyme and meter. Loved it.

Thank you dear friend for your kind comments. I'm the little old lady who sits on the bench and feeds the birds. I talk to them to and sometimes, if i"m lucky they talk back.

My guest arrived at three o’clock
In a lovely feathered hat and frock

            This brought frolicking to mind
            The sounds dance like
            Shimmering rays of sunlight
            Shining through the air

            The whole poem dances
            Enjoyed it much

Thank you so much Andy. My favorite is tea on the deck swing, watching the birds. It's one of the most relaxing things I can do.

                  Never mind inviting the birds.
Invite me, I'm into luxury. Granted, I'm going to look a bit daft in the bird feeder, but I don't care.

It's a deal, next tea party you're invited. Thank you for stopping by for a read.

A very cheerful poetry dear Bella
Nothing better than connecting with nature
Those birds sweet and chirpy makes mood lighten a lot
                    Really enjoyed your poetry

Thank you so much dear friend, glad you enjoyed the poem. They certainly are a mood stabilizer, and they are non-habit forming, or wait a minute, maybe they are.
