Encounter.
Wind riffled thru' waterproof fabric, dusk moved in
to galvanise intent and when dots
gathered speed and countless heads moved
across reeds in pewter-tint light
for bull-rush country to hunker in thickly
I knew then encounter
was nearing as sound over honking horizon
increased so despite mist I was resigned.
Beautiful din is each passing cloud of tinkling geese
in their massed search for finding roost
and hearing beak-yaps from first birds nearby
added bliss to the wait while I caught
flapping thrum of white wing-beating hundreds
before the finalé that night
then had to bid my reluctant goodbye.

A lovely read , Fay 🙂
Thank you dear poet-friend.
I've encountered this fine poem now Fay!
And thank you for doing so Orchi my friend.
What a gorgeous encounter indeed! Your descriptions are phenomenal and your wording is always superb. I adore this spectacle you've painted with words, what a shame though it had to end. Well, until the next one!
Yes those encounters stay long after the birds are gone on their journey again dear Rocky - -- their world is ruled by the tides and the moon and so the specialists say by the electro-magnetic pull of the earth..... we can wonder at seeing migration but we know not much about it all methinks.
There is something primeval in the magnificence of a flight of geese and wow they are gone too fast.
Love the picture of a murmuration. Not sure that geese ever do this though. I have never witnessed a mumuration of starlings but it's on my list for when i start travelling again.
Great writing Fay. Unsure whether you saw a mumuration and the geese were just a pre - event or were the geese the main attraction. Either way i love your writing here all the more for having re-read several times.
Ah Dusk - thank you for pointing the out a silly mistake due to rushing too much for a pic - will alter the image quick as I can....with an apology.
Please don't apologise. I really enjoyed your writing and it was all the better for re-reading (detective style LOL) several times.
I could just imagine myself there, taking it all in .. a privilege to witness for real and no less so to read it here .. Neville x
Yes it fills us with wonder when birds get the urge to migrate etc. So glad you were drawn into the moment when I watched the event a while back Nev..........x
How beautiful an encounter with a flock of geese, lucky you. Your poem describes this so well, I can almost hear them. A great write!
Thank you Bella and yes the sound is amazing. To encounter migration of birds is a wonder you never forget. So pleased you felt you could hear their singing my friend.
So real, what a beautiful scene to have witnessed. Thank you.
Wonderful images Fay, being at one with Nature is so wonderful.
