I Wish I had My Lass With Me - A Sea Shanty

Saxon Crow

As I look South across the sea

I wish I had my lass with me

Four months aboard with a lucky breeze

I wish I had my lass with me

I daren't look back from whence I came

I wish I had my lass with me

For if I did I'd cry for shame

I wish I had my lass with me

Hey ho hey ho

I ride the waves it's south I go

Hey ho hey ho

Australia a land unknown

As I look South across the sea

I wish I had my lass with me

Three months aboard with a lucky breeze

I wish I had my lass with me

I have no girl for company

I wish I had my lass with me

Just two score men as sad as me

I wish I had my lass with me

Hey ho hey ho

I ride the waves it's south I go

Hey ho hey ho

Australia a land unknown

As I look South across the sea

I wish I had my lass with me

Two months aboard with a lucky breeze

I wish I had my lass with me

My girls a distant memory

I wish I had my lass with me

I wonder if she misses me

I wish I had my lass with me

Hey ho hey ho

I ride the waves it's south I go

Hey ho hey ho

Australia a land unknown

As I look South across the sea

I wish I had my lass with me

One month left with a lucky breeze

I wish I had my lass with me

It's time I learnt to set her free

I wish I had my lass with me

I'll find someone else to marry me

I wish I had a lass with me

Hey ho hey ho

I ride the waves it's south I go

Hey ho hey ho

Australia a land unknown

Hey ho hey ho

We're getting closer every day

Hey ho hey ho

I'll find a lass in botany bay

  • Comment from author about the poem: The imagination is a funny old thing. Where do our ideas come from?! This poem is about a voyage to Australia in the 19th Century. With good weather it took four months to get to Oz from England! This shanty is of the crew not the convicts that were taken to Botany Bay

No matter the reason, your imagination has put out a charming read.

That's what puts poets apart: imagination. And you've got it in oodles - great fun write.
