The Sun Exploded Today

Rocky Lagou

So, after the screams and cries died down,

All that was left were the incandescent angels.

Some were lined up in rows, by the roads.

Others were merely under a lampshade.

But that’d become our only source of light.

They became so sacred and holy - that we began to worship them.

As if they were gods of some kind. People would drop to their knees,

Look up to the dimness of these bulbous cherubs and wail.

The sky had disappeared. Pure blackness had cradled the clouds.

It was full-blown mayhem on the streets.

But I was in my cave.

The stalactites dripped like raindrops, and the candlelight

Had become my eyes.

Our only question had been, “was the moon still intact?”

Nonetheless, I watched the world from afar, in a cauldron

Of the Earth, and the only thing I could think was:

All of the things mankind has been searching for,

Isn’t in this world.

  • Comment from author about the poem: It's been a bit since I posted but I've just been trying to complete all the work I have pending. This one speaks to humanity, apparently the world is supposed to end from the sun expanding during it's "red giant" phase and practically "swallow" the Earth. But here I give a perspective of the Sun simply exploding, and leaving us little humans hopeless. Everything in life is a cycle, and everyone is trying to find their own purpose. Kind of scary though. 🌞

You said it! "All the things mankind has been searching for, Isn't in this world" Your poetry is so full of metaphors and is quite beautiful but I go back to the last line I quoted because some people worship their things and some people money.....it's beyond the beyond. When we are gone we will know the true meaning of life. Great one again, Rocky!!

    • Rocky Lagou

Yes Christina! I couldn't agree more with your response. This world is in constant search for a meaning and purpose. Yet all the ones searching seem so desperate, as if if they don't find it while they're alive, they're doomed. I just like to live by Lana Del Rey's words,
"The whys in this lifetime I've found are inconsequential
compared to the magic of the nowness - the solution to most
      questions
      there are no reasons

And if there are - i'm wrong
but at least i won't have spent my life waiting
looking for God in the clouds of the dawn."

Thanks as always for your abundant care! It truly means beyond what I can express. Hope you're doing splendidly!

I am doing very well now, hope you are as well!

Sombre thoughts, but we live in uncertain times. There are many things to be concerned or worried about right now, but some of those things we can do nothing about. If the sun does eventually explode we are doomed, and we can do nothing about it. All we can do is try to be kind to our planet, and kind to each other, and hope for the best! As for life after death - I hope there is, but only time will tell! A thought-provoking write... as my comment will testify to!

Thanks so much! I really appreciate your thoughful remarks. This poem is simply a dive into humanity and a reflection to our vulnerability. Everyone is searching for something, whether it be a meaning or a purpose, to keep them sane and hopeful. However, when tragedy strikes, like the poem shows, it can really reveal the state of desperation we're in as humans. Everybody goes insane and it's like full-blown apocalypse mode. That's why I feel that at least while we're here, we simply just can't know for certain what our destiny is and what'll happen on the flipside of life. But we can all hold onto a hope, whether it be through faith or inner-peace, it's always important to bound ourselves in fertile soil, in order to avoid hoplessness. Thanks again for the keen review, have a bright day!

Fantastic read! I read a novel where part of the world was in total darkness (no sun at all) and the other part was always bright (24 hours sun). Mayhem, wars.....

Wow that sounds interesting, is it okay if you share the name? Thanks for the comment, I hope I made you think a little with the final lines. We're all just little stars in the vast galaxy, clinging onto whatever we can. Have a lovely day!

Sorry Rocky, I cannot remember the title. But I will ask the librarian to go through all the books I borrowed in the last few months and I'll try to recall the title. Will take some time.

Good words Rocky, mankind will find what it wants eventually.

                • Rocky Lagou

I do hope so Andy! In the meantime though, I hope everyone can just love each other, and spread kindness. After all we only have ourselves. Much love and thanks as always!

This was absolutely mind boggling dear Rocky….a beautiful perspective and a lovely write….I could feel the sun speaking with insight….very intriguing and thought provoking…,really enjoyed

Hi Spiller, many thanks dear poet! This one serves as a philosophical query, a tap into the desperateness of mankind's situation. Death is inevitable, and so is the end of everything. But I do hope that while we're here we can learn to love each other to utmost care and sincerity. Thanks again for always caring, have a splendid day!

i love how the poem starts with “so”. it makes it seem, simultaneously, like the introduction to a conversation and like the last argument, resolution.
the images that you employ are really beautiful because they are so detailed and so abstract at the same time!
really well done, your poetry is beautiful. this is the perfect example for that

                    • Rocky Lagou

Oh dear Junia! To see you've come back to this poem of mine to leave such a caring and thoughtful comment means so much to me. I do appreciate your recognition of the double-edged "So." And also for the metaphors. I just wanted to raise awareness to the dangers of life, the pitfalls that we can get caught in if we don't keep our head high and hope. Thanks again, have a lovely day!
