a fox

dusk arising

a fox
came into my garden that night
and triggered the motion lights
so I peered through the slats
at that sly old dawg reynard
as he went on his way to explore
here and there a sniff and a stare
so dog like and yet so fox
beautifully red unaware of my gaze
how ever did you sneak into here
mister nosey old fox you charmer
what led you to here on this night
then all of a sudden alarmed he freezes
with a stealthy silence stares to his left
such suspense whatever's he seen
but no... the pause passes
nonchalence is regained
by this master of the moonlit night
there's nothing to see here cept sly Mr fox
so I'm off back to bed carry on old reynard
my welcome stranger
I'll see you again on another still night

Dogs baying , horns trumpeting, horses stampeding. Fox "Meh".

the fantastic Mr Fox, is one of my favourite films
    and your words brought back
    my appreciation for that film
and its depiction of foxes, as
    inquisitively loveable, creatures
    a far cry - removed
from my reality, of coming across
their guts, splattered all over our motorways
    and country roads..
(sorry for my morbid last few lines
thanks for sharing Dusk, a wonderful read)

I honestly love foxes. They were always my favorite animal because of their beautiful colors and their wildness, but I just don't like how they're always depicted as evil and cruel. I feel that they're so much more than that. A wonderful poem, love the imagery.

You English and your foxes! Here in Texas we have gray and red foxes. We do not chase them in funny suits on horseback. But your description of one haunting the grounds in the moonlight is perfect. They don't have those long snouts for nothing!

I have not seen foxes in the wild. Your poem is wonderful and I could picture the scene vividly.

Foxes are beautiful creatures to see.
Many years ago one of my wife's colleagues used to have a fox come into her garden and lay down beside her dog.
