Original Thinking?

Saxon Crow

We are nothing but a by product

Of the times we live in

Our passionate arguments

Quoting yesterday's paper thinking

While out dated views

Conflict with the facts of today

Printed with invisible ink

Ready to fade away

Original thought is there if you dare

But it's just another story

That's been written somewhere

So who are we if we climb out this echo chamber life?

Would we be free of our labels and fabricated strifes?

Because we would not be able to deal with the responsibility of critical thinking

To be truly original is a terrible thing

The loneliest of mountains to singularly climb

In a range of finite product based living

And borrowed time

To have free choice would scare us enough to die?

The simple truth is we need each other

In this self replicating life

And all the while we social things

Are trapped safely in this story

The chapter of life will never change

And original thinking is a wasted glory

But thinking outside the box can bring so much clarity to our own minds,

    Good words SC.

    • Saxon Crow

You have highlighted the point by using the terminology thinking outside the box

    • tallisman

Deep stuff, well written, thanks , Tallis.

Well expressed . Interesting and engaging read , crow πŸ™‚

What? No original thought? No light bulb moments with 'idea!' springing up?!
Your user name 'By Product' now? heehee.

      • Saxon Crow

        Nope. Nada. Nothing. Zip.

      • JudyStella

A different view to creativity, but hey, variety is what makes everyone unique. How I understood you poem is that how much ever we think differently we go through similar experiences of love ,rejection, sadness etc and the same -like cycle of life where we end in death. There could be sarcasm hinted as well. Nice rhymming scheme!

        • Saxon Crow

Oh sarcasm is always at the forefront haha. I think I'm trying to highlight that if someone did have a truly original thought then it would not be accepted in a society where everything is a copy of an ideas of an idea of an idea. A truly original thought could not be comprehended. But it's just a thought for a poem that's all really

          • JudyStella

Ohh now I understand it more clearly! Actually it’s a great point Saxon! Thankyou for the explanation

          • Rozina

Original thinking did lead to new ideas, inventions, improvisations. Yes lonely for that person at the start; must have been terrifying but exhilarating at the same time. You got me thinking...
            Good one.

            • Saxon Crow

Original thinking nowadays though? I don't think such a thing can happen?

            • Fay Slimm.

Originality of thought has always been met with outright objection to the establishment - fine points made here on the loneliness caused for those brave souls who stood and still stand for singular conviction . Great read Sax.

                Thanks Fay πŸ™‚

This is doubtless true of some people. The original thinker still exists among us though, in large numbers. We must all learn to be our own person, and not be swayed by peer pressure, or what is considered the norm - if we think otherwise.

                • Saxon Crow

                  I'm not so sure anymore.

if every Poet, is owed a legacy
                  of lines
may these be yours, dear Poet..

                  empathetically: sincere)
I read and learn, and laud
                  and laud

                    Thanks LB. You're too kind.

" To Be Truly Original is a Terrible thing" such an apt observation. I totally agree to this

                    • Aradhya

I believe original thoughts still do exist inside every person just that sometimes it's incredibly hard to voice them out or even to identify your own thoughts because of the pressure from society. it takes quite a lot of courage to embrace your own ideas and come forward knowing a whole world might laugh at you, deem you silly and stupid... what is rare is such courage and bravery, i believe. great lines saxon, got me thinking. beautifully done!

                      • Saxon Crow

Thanks Aradhya. There's a debate to be had here I think lol.

                        • Aradhya

                          i guess yeah! hehe :))

                        • Rocky Lagou

Saxon, dear poet, just with the first two lines "We are nothing but a by product / Of the times we live in" I literally wanted to desist and just go straight to the comments to say "YOU ARE A GENIUS" but I decided to venture a little further before being that premature. Nonetheless, you did not fail to deliver. This is glorious because of it's truth, we're all "chained to the rhythm" like that Katy Perry song says, and we fail to accept anything that isn't already a "norm." Wonderful job.

                          • Saxon Crow

Thanks Rocky. Glad you enjoyed it.

In an age of questionable civility
to step up to ones responsibility
being true to that nagging conscience
when all around are speaking nonesense
if originality be one's holy grail
look to history and miserably fail.

                          • LMTobin

When I think of original, I think of Milton and 'Paradise Lost'. He broke all the rules and made the demons kind of 'cool'. I don't know how he was originally received--of course now everyone calls him a genius, but did they then?
