The Sea Of Eternity.

Goldfinch60

Such a sad day today,

For over seventy years

She has sat on the throne,

And now she has passed,

Passed into the forever,

Once more with her true love,

They will now sail together

On that sea of eternity,

Their love showing all the time.

Such a sad day today,

This is the day my dad died,

Died twenty-seven years ago.

He did not reach seventy,

Missed it by a month,

But he too is with his love

And like the Queen

Will be sailing together,

On that sea of eternity.

I'm pretty cynical toward monarchy or any of its like... but there is something to be honored in a woman making the best of her inherited title and role and leaving the trappings of power and self-indulgence behind, I think royalty will quietly disappear, but she did it so gracefully she made a bizarre thing into something lovely.

Thank you for your thoughtful words jarcher, she was so graceful in her life.

Yes and I neglected to mention how aptly you described her departure... the metaphor of departing on a boat is universal... Viking funerals, King Arthur, Matthew Arnold's Passing the Bar... but you made it fresh and moving.

A poignant write and tribute Gold.
It's happened again - sadness and joy on same day. Well, joy if two old school-friends like reaching age 65, with their birthdays on the same day!

You pen well the example such a diligent Queen who met her task of leading a nation through thick and thin for over 70 years. and echo the comments of jarcher in that she made the best of her inherited title.

Thank you Fay, such true words.

I think you have nailed it right there Andy -
You have definitely made a good call.
You have the right balance of reverence,
But let’s remember death comes to us all.

              • Goldfinch60

                Thank you Dave.

Yes, death is the one thing in life that we cannot avoid.

I listened to Il Devo as I read your poem and the tears just flowed. This is such a touching and heartfelt tribute to an incredible woman. The young girl who fell in love with a prince, how could she know what their future would bring? Her legacy will unfold for decades. A lovely remembrance of your father as well, I can picture them all sailing through eternity together. Beautiful dear Andy.
