Smoke No More.

Goldfinch60

There we were at the wedding reception,

My wife and I,

A nephew had plighted his troth to his lady

And there lives went into a new future.

The meal was over

I got out my cigarettes,

As did many others,

I smoked it

And then I realised,

Realised I was not enjoying it.

I had been smoking for twenty years,

That first one in the morning was special,

Then the ones with tea and coffee,

The ones after lunch and dinner were needed,

And how could I have a pint without a fag.

All this time I had smoked cigarettes

But on this day it came to me,

I no longer enjoyed it.

So on that day,

At the wedding reception,

I had my last cigarette.

It was hard to give up smoking

But give up smoking I did

On this day forty years ago.

Sixteenth October nineteen eighty two,

I gave up smoking.

I gave it up without starting. Well, I tried me first and last ciggy at about age 11 and it choked me!
It's terrible how many are affected by it. On medical progs, they say 'If only I had not smoked....'
We don't see it some much now, except, e.g. staff having fags outside during breaks. I hated it when it was allowed on buses. I think it was only upstairs, but downstairs was often full by the time the bus got to my stop.

Yes, my wife only had a puff of a cigarette in her younger days, coughed and never ever smoked. Thanks for your comments Orchi.

I’d sit up front on a double decker
      And smoke a foul Spanish from my girlfriend;
Man behind said ‘’I feel like a kipper’’
Them were the days, now my cough knows no end.

All true: I gave up in 1987 after twenty years and feel lucky to still be around…..

I can remember walking into the office and hardly see anybody due to the smoke in the room where most people smoked.
I too am glad I gave up smoking and we are both still here Dave.

Congratulations and well done GF60 .. that is no mean feat .. I also gave up nicotine about 20 years ago .. it was one of the hardest things to let go of ..

maybe as a matter of interest, I used to be able to get almost anyone that wanted to get off heroin in about 3 or 4 days by prescribing clean and safe opiate substitutes .. alcohol maybe in around 10 days or so .. but nicotine .. was another matter altogether .................... Neville

Thank you Neville. Yes it was not easy but we did it.

Interesting to hear your about heroin remedy. It is strange that throughout my long life I have never knowingly been in contact with any drugs except nicotine and alcohol, and I had my teenage years in the 1960's about which there is a saying "If you remember the 60's then you weren't there" Well I remember them and they were wonderful days.
