Tune: Was Lebet
('O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness')
**********
O ye wise men three, what has caused you to journey far?
We in the East did see the Saviour's star
Travelling over moors, mountains, fields, we have been
Now the blessed one, the Christ-child we have seen
In homage to Him our gifts we Him presented
They welcomed by Him, and none rejected
Precious gold offered, it honouring to a King
We bow before Him and our worship bring
Frankincense which as a cloud up to God ascends
Our prayers unto Him, He faithful attends
Seeking His will, that His kingdom on earth may come
All holy, righteous, be His hearth* and home
Myrrh, its bitter perfume prophesies sacrifice
The Lamb of God whose offering will suffice
For our salvation, people of every nation
And risen Saviour, He Jesus, God's Son
[The last verse in the hymn in sometimes repeated - and so here also]
O ye wise men three, what has caused you to journey far?
We in the East did see the Saviour's star
Travelling over moors, mountains, fields, we have been
Now the blessed one, the Christ-child we have seen

* Verse 3 - this is 'hearth', not a typo of 'earth'.

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 12.10.12.10. format. Some lines in the hymn have 13 syllables. It's a bit easier to use 12 syllables for the longer lines. Not the easiest format anyway. The first two lines came to me, then poem constructed from there onwards.

A fond memory from childhood is arranging the nativity scene under the Christmas tree. I always created mountains with a white sheet, stuffed with newspaper beneath, and the stable nestled in the middle. Figures of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in the manger, and of course the three wise men. We always left it all in place until little Christmas a week later, when the wise men were supposed to have visited the Holy Family. Thank you for this lovely poem dear Orchi, and for a trip down memory lane.
Thans Bella. Yes I noticed the wise men visited the young child (not baby) Jesus. Whether it was Dec 25th, or May 32nd (eh?) or whenever it was!
Good one Orchi.
Thanks Gold.
this kind of took me back to my own childhood family Christmases .. so that was kinda kind of you Mr. O 🙂
Thanks N.
