But Is It Poetry?

Goldfinch60

When people look at paintings where,

They don’t recognise the form,

The thought that comes from in them says;

“But is this really art?”

Can they not see the idea that

The artist tries to show?

Why don’t they open up their minds

And think of what they see.

So when I write words on the page

That neither rhyme nor scan

The thought may therefore come to some

“But is it poetry?”

I think that about my own writing. Not knowing what poetry really is, but we may have something to learn.

    • Goldfinch60

Thank you 2781. We are learning all the while, if we ever reach perfection for what do we aim.

Well, yes, I think it is poetry, writing or not, or having those iambic thingys or not (pentameters) - whatever they are?!
But I get lost in poems that are too cryptic.

      • arqios

Am I too, too cryptic haha... I'mma ask Fido!

        • orchidee

Doh, it's dull old me probably. I don't follow some cryptic poems. Fido understands every word of course. lol.

          • Goldfinch60

            Thanks Orchi.

Well of course and I have this with both my poetry and my art - especially my abstracts.

            • Goldfinch60

So true Michael and as you know I can see so much in abstract art.

What you have Andy, is a matter you wish to convey, utilising, broadly a poetic form.
              (Define 'Poetry', please...)

              • Goldfinch60

                Thank you Dave.
The definition of poetry is so obtuse.

                Andy

Then the terminology is totally redundant, Andy. Impossible to use with any authority.

Never mind - pins which stir me up are what keep me going....😇

                • arqios

Why there is this response is a natural human thing and observably applies to all categories of art and outside thereof. Funny that.

I have often asked myself this same question, Im sure we all have at some point,
True works of art and poetry is from the heart, meaningful and full of inspiration and emotion
In my opinion as long as we enjoy writing it and others enjoy reading our work, then it doesn't matter if it rhymes or not

                  • Goldfinch60

So very true, art and poetry come from the heart.

it is to me, my friend
                    a Most, cherished
                    Poetry!
                    an inked river of life-affirming
                    positivity and wisdom
                    to drink from, and grow
                    and grow
                    (I read and heed)
                    thank you!
for choosing to share, dear Poet

                    • Goldfinch60
