Poets Die, Poems Don't

Rocky Lagou

My nomadic nature has led me to this

Uncharted territory that is as ever-changing

As it is eternal.

There were two galaxies that intersected at my birth –

Yet, I believe that I am merely skin and bone,

And that a third Star shepherded me to my current abode.

I, luckily, have the privilege to call this place home.

Here, the land is fertile.

It waits for pilgrims to come, to sow, to reap.

Some are forever fruitful,

Others wait awhile for a good harvest,

Yet there is always something to receive - always something to give.

I am as fragile as I am bold.

And some stories are ought to be told.

And this land is thirsty for love – it shall wait no more.

I must sow my seeds - and go.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Dear community at My Poetic Side, it is truly such a pleasure to be back after such a long period of absence. There is not a singular reason for my time off, but I felt it has provided me the ability to grow more as a person both spiritually and professionally. I have been foraying into some prose writing, and I do hope to have my own NOVEL coming soon; it is still in its nascent state, but I’ll say this much, it’s eye-opening. I have also had the privilege to work with another dear poet whom I wrote a foreword for...more information about that will be forthcoming. All in all, though, I do want to say that because of school, and other personal matters, I may not be too active on this site like I used to. But I’ll make sure to respond to other poets the best I can, and hopefully publish more poems whenever an idea comes to mind. This poem, in particular, is about the fertility and immortality of poetry, juxtaposed with the fragility and transience of humankind. Much love

    Hi Rocky.

    • Rocky Lagou

Hello Orchi! I missed your bubbly attitude while I was gone. You're always so kind. I haven't forgotten about the message I sent you btw, I will be working on another love poem soon enough 😉

    • Goldfinch60

Good to see you back Rocky, poems will last forever.

Thanks for welcoming me back, you are truly such a wise gem that I always I always learn from. I liked the metaphor of sowing as the act of writing poetry, while reaping is like the act of reading poetry, and receiving some moral lesson from it. However, while the farmers (poets) may not always be there, the crops (poems) will always grow, die, and grow again...it's a neverending cycle that makes them so special and eternal. Have a lovely day!

Hello Rocky--it's been a while. Beautiful reflective poem. There are no words.........Christina

        • Rocky Lagou

Hi Christina! Thanks a bunch for dropping by. I have really been thinking about the metapoetic types of poems lately, like the ones that are centered on the topic of poetry itself, and I just love to ponder on the beauty and longevity of poems as a medium of expression. We can express all kinds of emotions and experiences all in just a couple of lines, and they will always exist for generations and generations to read and learn from. Poems are sort of like a time capsule, always keeping our memories intact for ages. Thanks for sharing the love, you're generosity is a bright light in my midst.

          • Christina8

I agree with you 100% and thanks for being so kind to me, you have always been a bright light in my midst as well!

          • Accidental Poet

Welcome back Rocky. I too sometimes am absent from here for long periods of time, but always come back when lyrical whims from my muse hit me where it ends up at my fingertips. Our poems are like our children, and they grow up to be something we all look back on fondly. Write on Rocky.

            • Rocky Lagou

Hello beloved poet, thanks so much for your kind words. It is nice to see that you can relate to the whole absence thing, sometimes I feel like I need to force poems out of me, but it truly is best (and healthy) to care for our poems and assure they are the best they can be before publishing them. I love that analogy, "poems are like our children," truly such wise insights from you. I am really glad you enjoyed this poem, I believe poetry is ethereal and powerful.

May your fatherhood be as lucrative as your own insights. 😉

                Amazing wirk!

                • Rocky Lagou

Hello poet, it's nice to see that you liked it. I feel a little hesitant sometimes to post my poems, since it's literally sharing your most intimate thoughts into the world, but people like you give me hope that I'm at least doing the whole poetry thing "semi-well." Have a great day!

                • Lorna

First time reading you and just loved this.... I'll watch for more......

                  • Rocky Lagou

Oh thanks so much Lorna, you're a poet with such precision and vividness. I'm truly touched to see that you could resonate with my words, I just try to express the most pure emotions and sensations in the best way I can, and it's always lovely to see that people can relate. Have a beautiful day!

Tis truly good to have you back Rocky, even if only in the interim ..

Having now visited todays gift thrice, I would agree entirely with your authors note description and can see clearly how and why you were inspired to pen it in the first place .. Bravo my friend .. Oh' n good luck with your novel .. Do let us know when it is in print .. Neville

                    • Rocky Lagou

Oh Neville, you're truly so kind!
I am overjoyed to see you perceived my inspirational source, and also to see that you enjoyed the end product. I feel poetry is so impactful to the readers, and having powerful poets like you to read makes it all the better.

Also, in regard to the novel, it really is quite the ambitious project I have in mind. It's a realistic fiction and is centered on the life of a deaf poet, but I don't want to spoil too much. I truly hope to fully realize the idea, and it's definitely a work-in-progress, but I think that with enough motivation I can make it come to fruition, and I'll make sure to share it with you all on MPS

                      • Neville

                        sounds like a plan .. a good one ..

A poem easily identified with. The last stanza and particularly the last line hit home.

Hello dear poet, it is always a delight to hear from you. I am so glad to see that you could relate with the poem, and I hope it's served as fertile land to inspire your future poetic endeavors. Much love!

Welcome home dear Rocky, I love hearing your crystal clear voice once again. You have phrased so beautifully the heart and soul of the poet. We have all lain fallow from time to time, and it is good to let the bon terre of our being rest and reflect, that we may come back anew. I wish you great joy and success in your literary endeavors, and look forward to reading all that you write. Peace and love dear friend!

                          • Rocky Lagou

Hi beloved! Thanks abundantly for your generous words, I am so glad that you were able to see yourself in this poem. I feel like poets sometimes do need to lie fallow, like you put it, and premeditate any further literary works to assure the purest expression. I am grateful for having such a kindhearted poet and friend like you, much love

I am new (at age 83) to the spiritual life (and to poetry as well) and appreciate the sensitivity (and sharing) that this poem achieves. Good luck on your novel and please keep on sharing. I am also deep into amateur singing (I've given more than 3,000 shows at senior facilities' over the past 30 years) I'm "retired" from that part of my life and now only sing every night to my wonderful girlfriend. I also have uploaded over 1,000 cover songs to my youtube channel.

Hello dear poet, thanks so much for your kind words. It is so lovely to be able to look back on life and feel fulfilled with the accomplishments and experiences of a life lived well. To hear that you have given back to your community by performing is so touching, everyone has a gift, and it’s up to us to use it for good. I love singing as well, and I’m sure you have a lovely voice – don’t ever take that gift for granted. I’m glad that we get to share our thoughts via this beautiful artform that is poetry, thanks for your generosity.

I'm not so sure about the lovely voice but I have learned over the years how to sing with true emotion and connectivity and love it while doing so. Thanx for your kind words.

                                may you ever
shine as Bright as your transcendent poetry)

Hi dear poet, thanks so much for the love. You are so kind and keen with your insights. Hope to share my novel once it's ready.

                                • sorenbarrett

I am grateful for your comments about the poem, they give it more context. It is still deep despite this and I feel the mortality of the person and the immortality of what one leaves behind. Good write.

This one is more than just a piece my friend. It's letters and words form the indelible footsteps that are your contribution in the writing world. This one says "Rocky was here". Vulnerable and endearing... Well done my friend. ❤
