Through Iron Bars

Nicholas Browning

An evergreen sheds its skin

Down foaming trails in a waterway.

They glide around, softly landing

On waves of white that never stay.

Through iron bars they differentiate

Between possibility and impermanence.

They bid farewell on a timely sail

That should be joyous but never is.

Flickering about like an oil lamp

In winded nights in a wretched haze,

Struggling to grasp similarity within

Discouragement and forgotten days.

To try and catch them, heavy walking

On the sidewalk, jumping cracks in the concrete;

Running faster, towards assurance

Of two things I know will never meet.

They disappear right past the shoreline

In inanition, pale and off; just destitute.

The charging stops to fall and weep

For some random petals that I never knew.

Good write N. though I've got bit lost as to the theme of this. Sometimes me brain's is not too poetic! lol.
Then part of an Advent hymn: 'The iron fetters yield' - probably symbolic fetters and chains that we may have.

Ahhh yes, no worries. The theme being pine needles falling down into a river just off a path through a wooded area, and the person in the poem watching them float on that river down to a storm drain/drain pipe outlet. Ya know, those ones that are stuck in a small hillside usually that lead the water somewhere; which sometimes can be difficult to find the exit to lol. And yeah, that would be a nice title and working theme I'd say!

There'll be a lot of them Christmas pine tree needles floating about. I had an artificial tree, but the tinsel needles fell off it! lol.

Fine words Nicholas, life can be like that and just disappear into the forever.
