On Meeting the Poet Laureate

Tom Dylan

Notice of absence from Tom Dylan
Sorry if there is a delay in responses. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon said, life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

I once met the Poet Laureate,

attending the reading in a

city-centre library.

The inspirational figure

recited verse that moved

myself and the entire audience

to tears.

The poems he delivered

cast a spell over everyone

in the large room.

He seemed to capture

the beautiful ugliness

of life itself in words.

At the end of the recital

I joined the line of people

queuing to meet the

great man and to express

how much the poet

and his words meant to them.

I don't know if he was having a bad day.

or was feeling under the weather,

or had signed too many books that afternoon

but when I said I'd really enjoyed the reading

and loved his work,

he told me to f*ck off.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem isn\\\'t actually true. I did meet the famous poet and after reading such lovely poems, he barely grunted at me as he signed my book. I decided if I cranked the volume right up this might make a poem.

Do you know, some folk may be good in their writings, etc, but meet them in person and they are grouches.
Ooh, a bit of laureating from him - a grunt! lol.

  • orchidee

So you've met me - a Poet Laureate! I'm getting too big for me boots now. lol.

Yeah it was a few years about, 2017 or so.. the reading was great, getting my book signed, not so great. 🙂

Excellent work Tom. You make the scene come alive.

Thanks, Thomas. Really appreciated. The guy was more grumpy than offensive but I thought I'd use a little poetic license to give it a better ending. Cheers.

Good fun words Tom, some people are just like that.

Thanks Andy. I decided if I turned it up a bit it would make a poem. Like those films that are 'based on true events.' 🙂 Cheers, Tom.

reminds me more than a tad of your poem you posted yesterday .. how rude .. or maybe he was having a bad day and was p'd off ... You just played a blinder here Tom .. 10/10 at least .. Neville

          • Tom Dylan

Thanks a lot, Neville. Really appreciated. He was actually just a bit grumpy and so different to the tone of his reading. Was like a different person. But for the sake of the poem, I cranked it up. 🙂

Some people do not live up to expectation Tom. Plenty more poets in the sea. This one poemed was rude .

You're so right, Cassie. Happy Friday. 🙂

And a happy Friday to you too Tom:)

Whoa! So much for the lofty title and grandeur, the vaunted position leaves too much wanting at this rate for any previous value to be authenticated. My la! Our own town of Elgin, Illinois yielded to an excellent local poet's suggestion they create the post for our city. Only problem is, they refused to give him the position, ever. I was offered it but declined because of that, since I believe he should have received the post. What use is such acclaim if you've no appreciation or value of your audience? Seriously. I suppose that's the reason you'll only find my work online, excepting one issue of a local arts periodical years ago featuring me and my oeuvre [back in 2017, that is]. What I want the limelight cannot give me. But you could prove me wrong, I suppose. Either way, after such a speel, I do so LOVE this pretty number in tribute to the event. Gorgeously rendered with charming imagery and a subtly haunting poignancy. Thank you so very much for sharing!

Bless ya, thanks for the comments. I met a famous poet, whose poetry is rather moving, and when it came to signing my book, he was about as personable as a bus driver! I decided, as I often do, to get my own back in writing. 😀 And yeah, I know what you mean. I tend to back off from the so-called writing community. I see these people making all this content. When do they actually sit down and write? Thanks as always.
