The Bells Of Lawson Tower

Accidental Poet

Lawson Tower

Built between 1901 - 1902

Structural beauty rising skyward

Inspiration from the Stahleck Castle

On Germany's Rhine River

Now resides in Scituate, Massachusetts

My gaze falls upon the Lawson Tower

A vision from Thomas W. Lawson in 1901

From his estate and home at "Dreamwold"

"The Copper King" as he was then known

Now, a century old water tower

Has become a poet's dream

And a photographer's obsession

Built with skilled New Englander hands

Retired shipbuilders from the North River

Standing 153 feet tall

A spiral stairway on the north side

Climbing 123 steps to the bell room

Ten bells, all of different pitch

Singing outward through large open windows

From the bell room you'll see far and wide

Of Scituate Lighthouse and the "American Army of Two"

Minot Lighthouse, a mile offshore with its 1-4-3 beacon

And even the Boston skyline 25 miles to the northwest

But time wears on all things great and small

The original water tank within

Decommissioned, drained and dismantled

Its purpose now long since turned over

To a newer tower on Pincin Hill

Still, 101 years after its birth

The outside shell of Lawson Tower

Stands proud and true

Though silenced in recent years

A restoration of bells and support beams

Now sit poised to sing out again

Let the townspeople forever more

Listen to the passion and charm in

The bells of Lawson Tower

A.P I can physically feel the pain in my knees just thinking of the stairs 🤭🌹

    • Accidental Poet

123 to be exact. When I was younger, I could climb the stairs nonstop. But these days I have to stop about 3 times on the way up. Yes, the knees and you have to catch your breath. BUT...once you're at the top, it's well worth the climb. 360 degrees view through all the big windows. And when the bells begin ringing, make sure to cover your ears, it can be a little loud. But over all a fantastic experience. Confession: at the top in the bell room on the wall I carved "I LOVE YOU SHARON" 😁🌹
