Crisis of Perception

Bella Shepard

I stand in the dark of night

When the stars are bright

And question my perception of life

Attempting to resolve misconception

Through reflection

Needing to be far, far away

From here and now

I hold out a thumb

And hitch a ride on a cosmic wave

I drift from the infinitesimally small

To the infinitely huge

And realize my miniscule part

In the vastness of it all

As I drift I meditate, contemplate

Until I am one with the universe

And when my sojourn ends

The world is in focus

I come home, blissfully alone

I see the world now

Through different eyes

I find my perspective

And manage my crisis of perception

If only for a little while

  • Comment from author about the poem: I feel we are on the verge of entropy, and I have to find some semblence of reality. It's there beneath the chaos and confusion we create, if we just look for it.

Hey Bella – glad to see you back!
My contemplation re the vastness of our universe and the true meaning of infinity first occurred in my mid-teens, when I eventually ended in some kind of mild (but disturbing) dissociative state which in turn led me to concentrate on the here and now.
At this part of my life cycle I am able to visit once more in much the way you have described in your great little piece which reached out to me. For that many thanks.

Arthur Stace certainly left his mark on Sydney!

Thank you dear friend for this wonderful comment, you have given me much to contemplate, and I will definitely check out your recommendation. I'm so grateful to be able to share such an experience with a kindred spirit, you've given me wings. Take care dear Dave!

Thank you so much Andy. I think about the song "This Little Light of Mine", and I guess we do need to let it shine no matter how small.

May the light keep shining in our lives Bella.

We seem to see our littleness more when it's night-time and dark. Though I suppose we could also look at the daytime sky.
Maybe seeing the night stars help us to recall the vastness more.
'Come see the stars, KP said to me'. 'Dang it, you woke me up', I replied! lol.

Thank your for your beautiful comment. I see a sweet, serious side of Orchi which is quite touching. Hope you and KP can enjoy the stars together, perhaps with a glass of wine.

Fido says to me - you should be, and can serious and sensible, sometimes - or poets may think you're nutty all the time!
And, ooh, yes, it's educational on 'ere - yes? lol.

What journey your imagery and emotion is wonderful dear Bella, lost inside. Brilliant 🌹

Thank you dear Teddy, it's been quite a journey lately. We seem to have lost the meaning of reality in my country, I almost consider it psychological warfare to divide and conquer. The only way I can deal with it is to find meaning in the natural world, which is the real world. Take care my friend!

This is an amazing write in several different ways. First I loved the subtle reinforcement of perspective by the introduction of the the thumb as artists use it to gain perspective but in double entendre it is used to hitch a ride. Yes a ride to understanding and perspective (how great is that?) The metaphor of darkness and star light is clear as is the reference to distance to gain perspective. The becoming one with the universe is a type of enlightenment as is the realization that perspective is temporary, A truly inspiring and masterful write Bella

I am blown away by such a kind and generous comment my dear friend. I must admit I've been overwhelmed of late by the happenings in this country, and I've turned to science and philosophy to keep it real. It took me quite a while to write this poem, but in the end I found what I was looking for, something I can hold onto and revisit, to keep me grounded no matter what happens. Take care my friend, you always keep it real and I thank you!

I find it extraordinary that besides myself, there is at least one other here on earth who thinks and feels and behaves in a very similar way to me .. and if that were not a magical realisation in itself .. to have them write about their experiences and perceptions in such an appreciable way makes the reading of it outstandingly cosmic and likewise awesome .. and then some .. bravo Bella .. My dear friend, to find another so atuned is to share a whole new perspective of our world, and a freedom of expression that is truly understood. I feel a comradery of perception which gives me great joy and hope. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

a poem I can truely relate to...
                      and felt every word.
if only I know where to look.
