National Poetry Day

Tom Dylan

Notice of absence from Tom Dylan
Sorry if there is a delay in replying or if I'm away for short periods. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon says, life is what happens while you're busy making other plans.

Today is National Poetry Day,

all across the UK poets

will be pouring their hearts

and souls on to the page,

today is National Poetry day,

today people are listening

today people will hear our words

and take them to heart

and heed our craft or art.

Today poetry is headline news,

like that 90s band getting back together.

Poetry is the hottest ticket in town,

but poetry doesn’t come

with a hefty price tag,

or dynamic ticketing.

Poetry does not sell-out in minutes.

Poetry will never forget her roots,

Poetry has a kind word and a massive hug.

Poetry has the kettle on

when you’ve had such a bad day.

Poetry knows how you feel.

Tomorrow, the day after

National Poetry Day,

when everyone has moved on,

to the latest five-minute fad,

we’ll still be scribbling away

on these spindrift pages,

hitting the typewriter keys

until our fingers bleed.

Tomorrow, the day after

National Poetry Day,

when the world has a brand new obsession,

poetry is going back underground,

and will be our little secret

once again.

Well, well, well. Put the kettle on, this fine, fine puddled, rainy morning cuz I'm so soaked to the bone by having to traipse out in it I'll catch my death of cold. Dang! I do so LOVE this tribute! You've gone and done it. Beautifully rendered with a waltzing poignancy and irresistible appeal, oh but I LOVE IT! Thank you so very much for sharing.

Wow, thanks so much for that reply! Your comments have made my day. And I posted early because I was bound to forget to post it nearer the time! Thanks again, Tom.

Yes, that's exactly it, Soren. If I had not posted it now, I would have forgotten to post it at all. Thanks so much for your comments.

That final stanza,Tom - the merest flick of the tail, is completion at its best. Not sure 'National Poetry Day' deserves that much attention, but you gave it your all anyway.

Thanks a lot, Dave. Appreciate your comments as always. Cheers, Tom.

Hey Tom, I would be lying if I was to say I didn't really enjoy this .. because of course, I did .. and whilst I am glad we celebrate certain days like mothers day and fathers day and ladies day for example .. I do think some of the so called designated days are a bit ridiculous .. I believe it was very recently 'Talk Like a Pirate Day' now aint that taking it a bit too far .. Stooopid or wot .. Neville

Yeah, as my poem makes the point, we'll be writing anyway regardless of what day it is. 🙂 And yep, all these days are rather silly. Oh yes, it's national scrambled eggs day today or whatever! 🙂 Thanks as always for your comments, Neville.
