Heart of England (for a Nottinghamshire Poetry Competition)

AuburnScribbler

Olden blades; both steel and grass,

sewed our Notts; to play,

both in life and sacrifice,

made remembered day,

from bishop Alexander,

to Jake’s lightning bolt,

such deeds are left shining,

from we; who will not halt,

for we’re the heart of England,

right here are merry men,

aiming to score every goal,

and get back up again,

as, when the times are hard,

we dance upon thin ice,

within; we hear; a warm applause,

our gold; we wear; so nice,

Lady Chatterley; would concur,

that such a place is fine,

key to the north; unlocks the door,

where things are quite sublime,

so, with all that said; my friend,

come, and take a look,

become part of the family,

what do you say, m’duck?

  • Comment from author about the poem: As the title says, this poem is entitled "Heart of England" which I wrote, and then entered; into a Nottinghamshire poetry competition. I did this, because I wanted to, and also as the result of a little poke of encouragement from Frances, a friend of mine, who can tune a mean piano. The task was to write a poem, about what I love about Nottinghamshire, thus, the poem is jam packed with Nottinghamshire references. See how many you can find whilst reading. It was lovely to be shortlisted, after the committee and public sifted through the many entries. Sadly, I did not win, but my poem was enjoyed by the county nonetheless. I hope that you enjoy the poem, I hope the place that you live in, is a positive fuel within your life, and as always, please stay safe everyone.

Whoa! Me thinks the judges didn't read this entry aloud as poetry is properly to be read, else why they failed to call you the winner eludes me. From the superb references to the waltzing imagery, the heartening poignancy and delightfully welcoming spirit, to the inviting end, I cannot but LOVE this! Thank you so very, very much for sharing!

Thanks for the read, for favouriting this poem and for your wonderfully worded praise, that has cuddled my heart Cheeky Missy, it is very much appreciated.

When I read this aloud to a few friends, they very much liked it too, but sadly they were not the panel. However, to be shortlisted was nice enough. I will keep my eyes peeled if there are any more poetry competitions that I can enter, where hopefully success could be had.

You are very welcome for this share, thanks again for your lovely words, and I hope that all is well.

Congratulations on being shortlisted. I’m not familiar with your part of the country, but merry men, must surely refer to Robin Hood. I enjoyed my visit. Thanks for the share.

I am sure if there are any more poetic competitions, about other places, I am sure I can brush up on my knowledge about them, and yes, you are correct about the Robin reference.

You are very welcome for this share, and I am glad that you enjoyed this poetic pit stop.

I hope that all is well.
