Halloween

sorenbarrett

It is the season which is the reason this tale I'll tell
Was a night full of fright I remember well
For fun kids did come on the run, looking for candy's spell
Skinny and small fat and tall, each in a costume shell

A jack-o-lantern lit, flames did spit, from the dark appeared a tiny child
Alone, with no one grown, timidly held out a crippled hand so mild
Asked where was his mother or brother he just stood quiet and smiled
Then turned his back disappeared into black with his sack of candy piled

The next group was a family troop that knocked on the door
The kids were glad but the mother looked sad, so I asked her what for
She said her youngest had died, then she cried, he had been only four
Of his hand maimed he was ashamed but sweets and Halloween he did adore

A great contrast of happiness and sadness, the show must go on, so very gracefully done my dear friend. 🌹

Thanks Teddy I had thought of adding another line but felt it unnecessary thinking some would percieve the possability

Ashamed of his hand with his family he would not stand and always went before.

A sad tale worthy of any day of celebration, always someone not present and missing out.

Thanks Cryptic I appreciate the read and comment. I debated about putting in two more lines but decided not. Ashamed of his hand with his family he would not stand and always went before.

Great poem...just right for the season. But, as always, you weave in a deeper message and the emotions of child-like joy and deep sorrow are beautifully juxtaposed. Perfect juxtaposition for when the veil between life and death is supposedly at its thinnest! Poetic brilliance. Great write!

                        • sorenbarrett

Thanks Bobby I appreciate the read friend and glad that you got meaning out of it. I think I made a mistake by not adding another two lines that I had but thought superfluous. I was wrong, it seems to subtle for most that have missed it.
