When Words Bleed

Cassie58

not since those final words

of Chidiock Tichborne

penned so many moons ago

a traitor or a martyr

take your pick

written prior to his youthful demise

have these eyes of mine

suffered so

a water well busted by a hit

let me tell you this

tears dripped unrestrained

a poem penetrated tissue

of resistant pain

words pierced chamber walls

to make their mark

a poem adrift from all others writ

touched every fibre of a

would be poets heart

I never agreed with the death penalty… it’s unfortunate

Thank you Neville. As a result of religion again. A plot to kill Elizabeth 1. He suffered an incredibly savage and horrific death. He may have been a traitor to the Queen but I admire him as a poet. His elegy written by himself, was particularly poignant. Pleased you checked it out. Quite a poet at 23.

I’ve just read your response again Neville lol. There was me thinking you’d gone to check Tichborne out! My word blindness! Yep, no secret I admire your poetry as well . Give yourself a pat on the back 😂. Have a good Monday.

Beautiful words "a poem penetrated tissue of restraint pain" a great line

            • Cassie58

Thank you Soren. His elegy was quite something. Quite the poet at 23.

History is for me where all truth begins…. but not that early. Hard to understand the mindset of your man and Guy Fawkes and the place of a religious belief so important to them. An introduction for me to a period I knew little about.
Given my feelings/attitude to capital punishment I found Tichborne’s poem, as you say, particularly poignant.
So many thanks for that Cassie aka Lassie.

              • Cassie58

Thanks Dave. He was a Catholic, died for his faith. Many do. I am not one of them. Pleased you checked him out. Have a good Monday.

              • Cheeky Missy

Forsooth, thank you so very much indeed for introducing me to this transient englishman tragically lost before his prime, thanks to that damning entanglement. Beautifully rendered with haunting poignancy and excellent details, thank you again very much.

                • Cassie58

Dear Missy, I am pleased for your visit and kind words. Thank you so much.

                • Tristan Robert Lange

Friend, you have moved me! "let me tell you this / tears dripped unrestrained / a poem penetrated tissue / of resistant pain". I can find my home in these words. I have never been a supporter of the death penalty. Reading any of these stories haunts me, and should haunt all of us, frankly. Very, very exquisitely written! Beautiful! 🌹👏

                  • Cassie58

I don’t support the death penalty either. He died for his faith. Thank you so much for your very encouraging review. I appreciate your visit here,

Such a moving write. And thanks for sharing about Tichborne. I will have to do a little digging myself.

                                  • Cassie58

If you are interested in English history, it is well worth the digging. Thank you Tom. All the best.

                                    • Kevin Hulme

Read Tichborne as advised. Yes, such a waste of young life. Like Keats and Many War Poets also.
                                      Sad Elegy.

                                      • Cassie58

Thank you Kevin and for researching him out. He may have died before his time, but he is remembered by other poets who recognize and feel his words centuries later. I like that idea. Similar for the war poets. All good wishes.
