Driving Ambition

Cassie58

tall turrets tower

towards sky’s ceiling

on a sunlit morning

where a neck stretches

with ambition

a route map for a

reckless small boy

as he ascends

climbing his potential

a dream for heights

he finds footholds

in red brickwork

honing his skills

imposed on Victorian

splendour where he climbs

to scale upwards

and outwards

on to a sloping roof

of his family home

lithe limbs move

sans fear

as young Mallory

peaks then descends

time and again

paving the way

for days ahead when

Everest loomed large

creating possibilities

of both glory and death

I've watched parkour before and this brought that to mind. Moving on to mountain climbing. A nostalgic write Cassie and one that has an outcome. Lovely

Thank you Soren. Had to look up parkour, which is a new word for me, so I have learned something today. Pleased you enjoyed this poem, a fascinating British Mountaineerr, who paid the price.

Wonderful Cassie! Mallory and other mountaineers fascinate me. I would not have ths courage they do, though my mind often climbs those peaks. 😂 Thank you for this my friend!

                    • Cassie58

Thank you Tristan. I climb mountains in my mind too 😂. I have been fascinated with Mallory and his part in mountaineering history for some time. Such an interesting character, and totally driven.

                      • Tristan Robert Lange

That took me to a few places this morning:
                        Smooth poem which climbed effortlessly to its conclusion;
Information on a historical figure which tickles the interest.
Reminded of my admiration of rock climbing.
Prompted Soren’s mention of parkour, which parallels my fascination.
                        Polished interesting write, Cassie.

                        • Cassie58

Thanks Dave. Mallory’s part in mountaineering history is fascinating. Well worth reading up on him. Totally driven to achieve his dream. Thanks for that lovely compliment. Much appreciated.

I believe that Mallory did reach the top of Everest as when his body was found in 1999 the photograph of his wife was not on it as he had said he would leave that photo on the top of Everest. Irvine who climber with Mallory has never been found an if he ever is their camera should be with him.

                          Andy

                          • Cassie58

Hello Andy, I share the same view as you do. I believe he died on the descent for the same reason you do. Irvine’s remains have been found recently I believe. Sad ending for the pair of them. We need to find the camera! Many thanks for stopping by.

You serve as such a nice counterbalance to my usual pessimism. this is just charming. Everest loomed large creating possibilities, indeed. very nice.
