Tune: Winchester New
('On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry')
Luke 7 v.24-28
*********
When you John Baptist went to see
Jesus asked the people, so be
What went you to desert to see
A redd shaken by wind freely?
Or to see one in soft raiment?
When you went was this your intent?
Behold, they who are dressed richly
They found in kings' palaces be
Or went you for prophet to see?
Yes, John Baptist a prophet he
And much more than a prophet for
He be my messenger for sure
As Isaiah of old did say
Behold, I send him you this day
Before Christ comes, he shall prepare
His way, then you shall see Christ there
Foe among those born of women
No greater prophet than John then
But who in God's kingdom least be
It true, such is greater than he

A fine hymn poem O .. N ππ
Thanks N.
Good choice of topic Orchi nicely worded and I always liked that the last should be first and the least the greatest. It has such a Taoist feel to it.
Thanks SB.
God said he would
John said he didn't
Jesus said: "And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come."
Thanks 2.
Another mighty fine Advent Hymn/Poem my friend. I am thoroughly enjoying the proper pace through Advent as so many people want to rush on by to Christmas. One cannot fully appreciate Christmas without the wait in Advent...just like one cannot fully appreciate Easter without first experiencing Lent and Holy Week, leading up. A wonderful job here, Orchi! πΉπ
Thanks T. Yep, it sure is Advent 3 Sunday!
I used to keep a very old hymnal on hand with the tunes for these rhyme schemes listed, for twas useful on several counts. This is charmingly rendered with a haunting poignancy and apt imagery. I half wish I could sing it.
Thanks CM.
