God's Christmas

sorenbarrett

Fisherman brag of your yacht to a drowning man
Colored paper trash thrown beneath a broken tree in a bed pan
A picture of you, proudly making change out of a Salvation Army pot
Mere veneer of cheer, a seven day Christmas cold you caught

Christ lives in beggar clothes, Allah in an infant's smile
Buddha in a rose that grows out of a garbage pile
The fisherman that brings your food in his creel, smells of fish
Your heart reveal, sit him at your meal with more than scraps on a dirty dish

Fill his glass with memories of when you asked with extended hand
Take from your plenty amassed, bow to his command
Kneel before this tainted saint, ask forgiveness from his facade
Through eyes of charity, yourself acquaint with the face of your god

Neville the very best to you and yours for this Christmas season and although neither you or I may share the common belief still the idea of peace and good will persists and blooms. Thank you so kindly for your words of support and generous reviews and comments.

Hey Soren, this poem is a profound and thought-provoking reflection on the true meaning of charity and the divine presence in everyday life. The stark contrasts you draw between superficial displays of wealth and the genuine needs of others powerfully highlight the disconnect that often exists in society.

        • sorenbarrett

Thank you so much my friend wishing you the very best of the season and its meaning.

          • TobaniNataiella

To me this well written piece is a stark reminder of how Christmas does not bring all people together, in some cases it increases the divides between the Have`s, The Pretenders and the Have not`s, i really enjoyed reading this, Thank you

Christmas will be whatever it is. It also comes from the heart.

“ Christ lives in beggar clothes, / Allah in an infant's smile / Buddha is a rose that grows out of a garbage pile.” This is the heart of the Christmas message…that we are all connected and should not ignore others in their plight. That no one should be left without hope, peace, joy and love…not on Christmas Day or any other. Yet so many are. Your poem is excellent, my friend!

                        • sorenbarrett

You got it friend that is the message that has become lost. Appreciate your read and comment.

Christmas time, a time to count our own blessings and to remember the many people who struggle with life for a myriad of different reasons. A time to be generous to those less fortunate. A beautiful, compassionate poem Soren. I am not a fan of organised religion but spiritual I will always be. Lovely work.

                          • sorenbarrett

Thank you Cassie I too am not religious but religious symbols pervade our culture and serve as well recognized metaphors for meaning. I appreciate your comments and support and it is not by prayers that we show our gratitude and charity but through actions.

So very powerful with an enormity of metaphor that is most appreciated as I myself am not a single bit religious. Brilliant dear sorrenbarret 🌹

                            • sorenbarrett

Thank you Teddy for reading and recognizing that although I too am not religious I am not above using its metaphor to make a point.

Let folks make what they will of the Festive Season. You have made it with your well honed piece. A rich read, Soren. But it is going to take more than all the charities put together at all times of the year to resolve poverty and inequality.
I'm going to raise a glass to all those poor poets in the north who are suffering in the Winter Solstice.😊

                                  • sorenbarrett

Thanks Dave. You are right charity is not a cure for poverty but it is a cure for poverty in one's heart and little acts can make anothers day. Yea again right I'll liftmy cup in the south and say cheers.
