Tune: Puer Nobis
('Unto us a boy is born')
For Holy Innocents Day: Dec 28.
************
Wise men to King Herod they
Did not return that day
When they saw the young Christ-child
Abiding with mother mild
Abiding with mother mild
Then Herod, he with rage filled
Sent forth decree, he willed
To kill Bethl'em's children, they
Little boys under two be
Little boys under two be
Then was fulfilled prophet's word
Lamentation sore heard
Jeremiah said, Israel
Would weep, mourn, for children wail
Would weep, mourn, for children wail
Comforted they would not be
Babies, toddlers gone, see
But Jesus, Joseph, Mary
In safety in Egypt be
In safety in Egypt be
Holy innocent children
Murdered by Herod's men
Light of Christ upon us shine
Dispel dark by rays divine
Dispel dark by rays divine

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 7.6.7.7.7. Not really a Carol, and not a joyful theme, but I have used a Carol tune here. Herod's painful end came later - he was eaten of worms with a ghastly disease. The event is remembered today, but is likely to be a while after Christmas, as Jesus was a 'young child' by the time the wise men saw him at the 'Epiphany', which is on Jan 6th.

That Herod sounds like a nasty geezer ..
Yes, but justice was done later - them hungry worms! Urgh!
A dark hymn indeed as always nicely worded
Thanks SB.
Yes, indeed, we celebrate Jesus' life in a year...but his life took longer than a year to live! LOL! Well done, my friend. This is right up my alley. I love Coventry Carol! One of my favorite carol/hymns. And indeed, Herod's end was not pleasant. Well done, Orchi! 🙏❤️
Thanks T.
Aptly named poem dear Orchi, cruelty and thirst for power has always been there. I like to think that in Jesus's birth the light of love and compassion came into the world, we just have to fan those flame and make it glow.
Thanks B.
A very poignant 😢
hymn poem,
really touched
the heart strings! 👍
Thanks for sharing 🙏
Best regards ✌️ Thad
Thanks T.
Of all the scriptural tales, these ones (Egypt and Bethlehem) made the deepest imprint on my childhood musings. Imagine, whole classrooms bare of that batch of male students. I attended an all boys school you see.
Thanks A.
Your welcome O 👍🏻
Good one Orchi.
Thanks Gold.
