Musings on a morning walk in the snow

Bella Shepard

Early morning, it’s still dark

I venture out for my walk

Only the glow of a street lamp

And the lights on my vest

To illuminate my way

As I walk snow is falling

And all is quiet

Here and now

I see my footprints in the pristine snow

No one has been here before me

Just me and the thoughts in my head

That's all that exists

Here and now

I can hear the snow as it lightly pelts

The big furry hood of my coat

My favorite music plays on my phone

Melodiously surrounding me

Here and now

My shoes bearing down on this carpet of white

Slip slightly beneath my weight

And I must be more careful as I go forward

I stick out my tongue and taste the snow as it falls

Giant skeletons of trees stand guard as I pass by

A bright red cardinal has come to sit in a barren bush

The stark white background framing his beauty

Here and now

I reach my turning point and as I head for home

The footsteps I’ve left in the snow

Are rapidly fading as it continues to fall

And soon it will be as if I was never here

Later this morning the storm will hit with full force, or so they say

But all is peaceful and white

Here and now

There is something very calming and soothing about being in the snow, and it does encourage reflection. This poem written in a way that i felt i was on the walk to, really enjoyed it.

The companionship is greatly appreciated, so glad that you enjoyed. As I walked and a line came into my head, I stopped and sent myself an email. By the time I got home I had at least10 to put into some form. You're so right about the reflection time, it's the best part of the day for me no matter what the weather. Take good care!

            You are very welcome

We live in the here and now and all else fades as footsteps in a snow storm. Enjoying the hear and now as in tasting the snow and hearing it fall are what joys that this earth provides. Keeping our mind focused on the now prevents our slipping. The line "And soon it will be as if I was never here" is great and reinforces that we are nothing but shadows soon forgotten after we are gone. Lovely Bella

Dear friend, you read my mind, your comment reflects exactly what I was thinking and feeling. I chose a shadow for my profile picture for that very reason. It is always a treat to share these thoughts with such a kindred spirit. Thank you for your support, and for your kind fav.

You are so kind dear Tom, thank you. It was the first snow of the season and it was heavenly.

I can remember as far back as the days when I too could walk in the snow that fell long and deep, exactly the way you have so eloquently portraited here .. indeed, I can also recall little things of beauty that would catch my eye on the way the things that stand out and the retina retains .. such a treat to follow in those footprints of yours on a cold day but from the relative warmth of my study .. So good to hear from you dear friend, hope all is good healthwise with you and your wife. Thank you for sharing my walk from the warmth of your study. That storm did hit, and since then it's been frigid temps and staying indoors. Take care!
