Tom Dylan

Notice of absence from Tom Dylan
Sorry if there is a delay in responses. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon said, life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

I can still feel the burn in my throat of

the last hit of single-malt whiskey

as I lie in the midnight darkness,

I need sleep, I need to drift away,

but rather than delicate slumber

what comes to visit is

visions and voices,

an endless list of things,

things I need to do

things I should have done

things I should not have said.

ideas for stories and poems

bounce around my head

characters chatter away to each other.

Guys, I say, can you keep it down,

I need to sleep.

As I lie in the smothering darkness

the rest of the world

seems far away, on the other side

of a vast ink-black ocean.

As the sky lightens and the sun softly rises

a line from a Pink Floyd song

pirouettes around my head

Is there anybody out there?

Love that song it resonates with so many. Sleepless nights are few for me but I appeciate how difficult they are. Time ticks away as approaches day and the more one dwells the hotter hell's fire swells. Your poem resonates with many

Thanks a lot, Soren. December was hectic with Christmas approaching and work being chaotic. I found it hard to switch off at night. Thanks again for your comments.

https://youtu.be/CIxYe3G3Iz4 “Is there anybody out there” Pink Floyd. Fruit of sleepless nights, that’s a muse of poetry for insomniacs and the sleep deprived! Good stuff.

Fine words Tom, I am like that myself sometimes and it is surprising how many poems come to me when I struggle to sleep.

Yes, that is exactly it. So many ideas for stories and poems come to me during the night. I often make the mistake of telling myself I will remember the idea in the morning. Unless I make a quick note, I rarely do. Thanks for your comments. Cheers, Tom.

I know exactly what you mean.
With me when in the middle of a Poem, I can’t sleep until I’ve got the line straight.

                  • Tom Dylan

That is exactly it, Kevin. Glad it is not just me. Thanks for your comments.
