Couple Goals

Tom Dylan

Notice of absence from Tom Dylan
Sorry if there is a delay in responses. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon said, life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.

The couple sit on the wooden bench

at the busy shopping mall.

Young couples, their grandchildren’s age,

parade along swinging designer

shopping bags

and either talk over each other

or stare at their mobile phones.

The couple say nothing.

When you have been married as long

as they have,

what is left to say?

On Christmas Day

their son asks what they bought

each other

for Christmas.

Nothing, they reply.

We don’t need anything.

While their son calls them miserable,

they exchange a glance.

Their unsaid words

hanging in the air between them

like tinsel,

we’ve got each other.

It`s a lovely message that actually you do not need all the modern trappings to be happy, if you are with some one you love, that can be plenty, Enjoyed the read

Yes, that is what I came away thinking. My grandmother used to buy my granddad some tobacco for his pipe for his birthday, as he did not need anything else. Love, and pipe tobacco, is all you need. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for your comments.

A lovely message here. Love rules. Material possessions are insignificant in the bigger picture. Enjoyed the read Tom.

Reminds me of an Old Couple I saw about Two-Years back, sitting on a bench together in the Park. They were so quiet, but seemed to say โ€˜Weโ€™ve Come so far through the years , and weโ€™re still HERE, together. Nice One.

Yeah, that is exactly it. We were chatting over the holidays and my parents said that they had not bought each other anything for Christmas. The more I thought about it, that was a lovely thing. Thanks for your comments, Kevin. Really appreciated.

Dear poet, after being married 54 years my husband and I share those characteristics you have so well versed. When you have each other, you have everything. Thank you for saying it.

It's sheer maturity which does not come with age but by experience, so charmingly rendered to effect herein. My own parents took "dates" without leaving the house, after they'd tucked us all in bed, and wherever they could find an opportunity...for as long as they lived. It's kinda like I told my late mother years ago, "when you know each other well enough, it's so nice to be able to just be together without needing to say anything." There's no tangible item which surpasses the priceless time we spend with one another. Alas, did I talk too much?
Beautifully rendered with excellent imagery and a haunting poignancy. Thank you very, very much for sharing.
