Roofing Conundrum

Doggerel Dave

Notice of absence from Doggerel Dave
I do return sometimes... occasionally...

So cave and thatch evolved until the mass of folks were housed

(A roof, shelter, the necessity of which all espoused)

Through the glorious miracle of your market forces,

And take a guess: the political class fully endorses.

This blessing, like the wind, not evenly distributed,

Doesn’t prevent approval by those whom luck visited.

They, the prosperous, do fetishise its stability,

Attribute a quality beyond its utility -

It becomes a valued asset, a form of wealth exchange,

Accumulated and so allows one to rearrange

One’s holdings to thus provide for (their) future generations;

Inheritance assured, splendid upcomming expectations.

Though let’s not stop there – simply mortgage and thus acquire

Rental assets to family who can find a use for more,

While the rest (the young) in a situation all should appall

Just end up with rent arrears or homeless and sweet fuck all.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I don’t believe in long notes – it’s either in the verse or it ain’t, but here: Psychologists, social workers, commentators within the third estate all have answers, solutions to delinquency, domestic violence, drug dependency, homelessness and so on when it really relates to the unwillingness of politicians to do anything which might disturb the market…and…loose…the… next…election… And as Neville might have said 'Not everyone is gonna like this...'

Some of us are so lucky to have a roof over out heads Dave, there are so many who don't and the people that could deal with that problem just don't care.

    Andy

    • Doggerel Dave

Got that right, Andy. Many thanks for the read.

Are you gonna like this - a NS comment from Sir Orchi, when he can think of one? lol.

      • Doggerel Dave

Tell me the location of the cage you live in and I'll come and give it a great rattle.

      • arqios

That’s the existential angst personified in this generation’s reality.

        • Doggerel Dave

Got me there, Rik. Want to tell that to the Pollies? That should change their minds.

          • arqios

What! And give them more ammo!? Not likely. 😃🙏🏻🕊️

            • Doggerel Dave

I find it hard to believe you are taking this seriously......

              • arqios

Nah mate, my MP’s got a hearing problem …

                • Doggerel Dave

                  'MO' in this context?

                  • arqios

MP not MO, lol… I can’t even type

                    • Doggerel Dave

                      Good to get that sorted....

                    • sorenbarrett

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer and politicians are there to keep it that way. Another stab at the back of Caesar Dave? A good read that needed to be said. Economics rules all.

                      • Doggerel Dave

Yeh – got that about right, Soren. If we take my post as read, the point I wish to make is for once found in the too long note underneath..
Housing prices, which continue to rise will never become more affordable because there are too many home owner voters, plus what we naively in this country call ‘Mum and Dad investors’ (owners of what pollies try to convince are owners of a rental property – not a handful or a bucket load) would vote that government out of office.
In the meantime those societal disfunctions I list are exacerbated by the inability to shift into independent affordable accommodation.

                        • sorenbarrett

Beyond this Dave. If you own a house the price goes up so high that the taxes become unaffordable as well as the insurance so even if you leave it to your children they can't afford it.

                          • Doggerel Dave

The tragedy! Maybe so where you live Soren, but I'm pretty sure (by observation only as I'm not in the market) that this doesn't apply here.

                            • Doggerel Dave

(just had a night’s sleep) Like to clarify the Caesar reference?
A little worried that all the accommodation in your neck of the woods crumbles into unaffordable ruin after a generation. Maybe ‘neck of the woods’ is relevant? Maybe second generation goes live in what is left of the Amazon Rainforest? lol .Thanks as ever for your input, Soren.

Speaking of where I live in Florida where property cost on the beach has skyrocketed over the years what cost $120,000.00 35 years ago now is $2,000,000.00 today and what was $1,000.00 in taxes now $14,000.00 a year and insurance gone up from $200.00 a month to $1,200.00 a month. Too much for the working man.

                                • Doggerel Dave

I’ve reached the stage where I’d wish for a cyclone (Your hurricane perhaps?) the beach eroded…
Still no sign of Caesar….Anyway my underlying message as in my note is…
A deep knowledge of systems theory is unnecessary to understand that movement in one part of a system has an effect on other parts of the system. Society a system. Psychologists and Social Workers are pissing in the wind, frankly when they prescribe solutions which do not involve the underprivileged with the right to decent independent shelter.

I do like it and totally agree with the sentiment of the write, enjoyed the read

                                  • Doggerel Dave

Well thanks for that - Not sure I want people to enjoy it though.....

Well, Neville is surely right about that. But not everything is meant for everyone to like. As for me, I love anything that speaks truth to power. Well done on this, Dave! 🌹👏

                                    • Doggerel Dave

Thanks for joining in, Tristan. This is the second in a series (commenced one immediately prior) which I hope to make a trilogy. Overall title something like “A Good Moan About Things I Think Important” (must work on that). What should the final topic be? (on Love perhaps??) and which signature four letter word should I include? Ah – decisions, decisions…..🙃👍

LOL! I am sitting back with 🍿 my friend. Can't wait to find out.

                                        Excellent write

                                        • Doggerel Dave

Excellent you should find it so. Thanks.

                                            You're welcome

Unlike San Andreas, I can find no flaw or fault in todays offering whatsoever .. On the contrary, I applaud you & it for the frankness contained therein .. and consequently assign the dubble 👍👍

                                            • Doggerel Dave

Thanks Neville. It really is nice to know you always have my back - even when I (only occasionally!) sing off key....🙏

Young people have much to be upset about. It is almost impossible for many to buy a home these days and rented accommodation is in very short supply and very expensive. Why? Politicians again. Supply and demand. If you don’t build houses and you have mass uncontrolled immigration, guess what? It affects house prices and availability of homes. Kids are staying at home longer. I have three twenty plus year olds at home still. Build homes, at affordable prices social and private. Will they? Don’t be daft, we are going back to the 1950’s. Leave your home to your kids, inheritance tax will mean they have to sell it, they won’t be able to afford living in it. Great, ain’t it. Just thought I would chip in my penny worth Dave. We have a massive shortage of housing. Everyone deserves a roof over their head.

                                              • Doggerel Dave

Thanks Cassie. You have comprehensively detailed the situation in the UK which might differ in teensy detail with Oz but overall is very much the same.
Beyond all the individual problems which Psychologists and Social Workers are meant to solve (individuals are damaged by this problem and only sticking plaster solutions are available) how do kids disentangle themselves from dysfunctional families when there is nowhere for them to go.....? And.....(I have to add this) Your kids (now adults) are in one sense lucky to be part of a supportive family. Though even so the only way they will properly individuate is to physically separate from their family of origin.
Your contribution is worth much more than a penny, mate - it has allowed me to continue to ventilate....!

You know, I forgot you could trick out a diatribe so expertly. Thank you for reminding me. Awesomely rendered with superb imagery and a haunting, damning poignancy I still argue with.

                                                • Doggerel Dave

You are with me here, aren't you??

Thanks for your efforts to keep my rants gently bubbling, Missy.
