Tune: Passion Chorale
('O sacred head, sore wounded')
Matthew 27 v. 57-66 parts
**********
On crucifixion evening
Joseph [of Arimathea], request did bring
He Jesus' disciple
Pleased with Pilate all
That he might Jesus bury
Pilate said, So it be
He took the body, prepared
It for burial, cared
Laid it in his own tomb new
This loving deed did do
Tomb hewn from the rock, and he
Rolled great stone to door, see
Two Marys there, they sat near
The tomb, saw the scene there
Next day though a guard was set
Tomb held not Christ e'en yet
Though some thought His disciples
Would steal His body all
For He said, 'After three days
I will rise,' true He says
So guard granted, and stone sealed
Jesus He not concealed
Within tomb, but rose again
The Saviour of all men* (*mankind)
