Slabs of stone
Greet the morning sun
Or is it the Sun
That warms their cold
Thawing the shiver
Of their last moments
Bringing light to that tunnel
only to dim again at dusk-
So let’s keep the torch lit
Lest We Forget

Mostly underrated
Indeed.I must say I get emotional on Anzac Day. A nice tribute poem.Well done.
I do too, coming from a family that has served in that capacity it has a really close meaning to home. ππ»ποΈ
A beautiful tribute to the fallen. Those brave souls that fought for what we no enjoy. A wonderful poem of metaphor that pairs the cold and heat of war with the cold and heat of what was fought for. The light and the darkness of what was wone. Great symbolism.
Glad that the subtle metaphor pattern worked outππ»ποΈ
LEST WE FORGET all subsequent wars, the casualties on all sides, (both civilian as well as military) the stupidity of politicians and the military industrial complex which inflicts it all.
A redux
Exactly. It appears we forget daily. βWe,β meaning those with executive powers. Sometimes it feels they use this day to promote the next war rather than its original intent- the end of warring itself.
Thanks Mate. I shall continue to push this every time I find war memoriams are pasted here.
Absolutely⦠Well said.

Thanks John, much appreciated ππ»ποΈ
A beautiful tribute. Our "Memorial Day" is coming up at the end of May. It is emotional for me too. Many of my family members served and fought, including my Dad, who is currently paying the price for his service. I wish all wars would end, but we should honor and remember those who are forced to fight in them...and let their memory be the impetus for pushing for peace. A wonderful poem that highlights what we should NEVER no matter where we're from. A fave from me, my friend! May ANZAC Day be a powerful day of remembrance for you all in Australian and New Zealand!
Cheers mateππ»ποΈ

Powerful and poignant.
Many thanksπππ»
"WE WILL REMEMBER THEM."

βLest We Forgetβ
Thank you for sharing these deeply evocative lines; they resonate with me as we have so many memories to honor and never forget. Thank you!
Thank you kindly. Honouring memories is quite important ππ»ποΈ
Yes , my Father was a D.Day Veteran. We must ALWAYS remember them all . And the Anzac's at Gallipoli: Terrible loss.
Fine Poem.
Thanks Kevin. Most appreciated ππ»π
1995 wasn't that long ago... whence this is all the more exquisite, where the coldness of sheer death eats through your skin and reaches to your heart, leering at you almost hungrily. They want every last one of us dead, and systematically push forward, coldly calculating. We're supposed to be solaced by these memorials as if such could mollify. Beautifully rendered with excellent imagery and a haunting poignancy. Thank you for sharing.
I had despaired of traveling overseas by that time but then found myself in continental Europe and along its quaint roads found memorials and cemeteries that brought me to bloodied history wherein members of the family had been pawns and figures, patriots and upstanding citizens. That together with what you so eloquently described brought me round to reconciling all these opposing and incongruent thoughts, beliefs and feelings. Thanks kindly ππ»ποΈ
Oh, truly, rather, thank you.
Most welcome and thank you muchlyππ»ποΈ
