Suddenly
I realized that I expect to grow old.
I suppose this expectation creeps in along the sides of my mind
with every routine
every bill come and gone
every plan for "someday"
but now and then
I get shaken awake
by something so simple
so phenomenal
like the sunlight and breeze and birdsong
pouring in through my kitchen window
over my sink full of unwashed dishes
and suddenly I know
I quake with the knowing
that it's not forever
All. Things. End.
And suddenly This Window
has thrown open my very heart
my eyes, my mouth, my ears and pores
all stretching w i d e
in agonizing want
of the Now
to stream into me like a waterfall
some deep dark core of me cries out
to be saturated with it
to drink it in until I can't breathe
for every one of my cells to blaze with this life
because soon-
all too soon,
it will be gone.

Recognition sometimes is stark and startling. A poem from one still stuck on life. Lovely

Thank you Thomas- maybe it will inspire you to do something a little differently today, even if it’s just a small change in perception
Spot on! You got it! I cannot pinpoint the exact age I was nor date this realization dawned on me but as you beautifully illustrate herein, my poetry whispered it. Excellently rendered with exquisite imagery and a fittingly haunting poignancy. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much for the feedback and it is comforting to know someone else can share these feelings with me! Let’s live girl! GO FORTH !! Haha
"There's something inside us that isn't human," as someone observed (meant in a sense of wonder and reverence).
Great write.
