I’m Here Today…

Doggerel Dave

Notice of absence from Doggerel Dave
I do return sometimes... occasionally...

Yes, consciousness burns bright in each of us.

Now tell me please, what precisely is that?

I view the world through my bodily frame -

My existence, just what process did begat?

I would be very pretentious to provide and answer that no one else has been able to adequately explain. Some say neurochemical but that is the same as saying God and gives no real answer being teleological in nature. So this is a tough one Dave I give. Made me think though

    • Doggerel Dave

Precisely - a frustratingly unresolved issue in the science stream of exploration/thought. And although I specifically requested I did not want a God answer, I have every sympathy for those who decide to give this for me unlikely entity the credit...

      Thanks for the response, Soren.

    • Cheeky Missy

Being the philisopher now, are we? How am I supposed to answer in a trice, especially with your warning? Here, "...in Him we live, and move, and have our being--" so I didn't use the 3-letter word you forbade me using, but that's my answer. And if it's not your ancestors, who are you wanting???
Beautifully rendered riddle. Thank you for sharing.

      • Doggerel Dave

Oh don't be like that. I didn't forbid anything. Wasn't a warning either. I gave a gentle hint as to my preferences in my comment space, for I wanted a focus on the dismal lack of progress science has made in solving this 'riddle'. Admire the way you pop in some sugar ('beautifully rendered') to help the medicine......

        • Cheeky Missy

Science is not only a bona fide religion in its own right, but also the most pervasive religion in the world, as there is no other belief system which fails to recognize and honor science. It is rather frightening in that light. And since I'm insufficiently versed in that religion's answers for your query, I cannot answer it as you desire, only as I did.

          • Doggerel Dave

You are getting terribly serious here, Missy. come on lighten up. Where's the 'wonderful rendering' and all that? And you use the term religion three times..... after that I'm a little lost as to what the term 'religion' means to you.....

            • Cheeky Missy

We already established that you've rendered this beautifully, nor would want to punish you with multiple repetitions of accolades. Thank you again for sharing.

              • Doggerel Dave

Oh I can take the punishment - I'm a martyr when it comes to that kind of lashing.....lol

              • Jerry Reynolds

                Good write, Dave.
                A thought.
We do not view the world through our bodily frame.
Nothing leaves our body to fetch back anything.
The world enters our body through our senses.
We create the world in our minds.
We could all be living in different worlds but
because we all use the same names
                we agree with each other.

                • Doggerel Dave

I get that completely, Jerry - in much the same way I've reconciled it all. But there is a receptivity to externalities there, which I'm pretty sure (almost sure) does not exist in inanimate objects...!
                  Thanks for the call.

                • Poetic Licence

Impossible for a definite answer, me, I feel I view the world through what I see and hear, that creates my feelings, thoughts and emotions and that gives weight to my existence, a tough question but enjoyable

                  • Doggerel Dave

Yes - I enjoyed pinning it because no one in the big bad world out there has come within a cooee of an answer.
Glad you came this way anyhow.

                    • Poetic Licence

                      You are very welcome

                    • orchidee

Well, I can't give an answer other than 'God' - ultimately, if tracing back our ancestors to.... Adam and Eve. I bet you knew I was gonna say that!
Meanwhile - 'You thinking there? You'll get a headache!', Fido says to me. lol.
And - Will ya be here tomorrow too?!

                      • Doggerel Dave

Orchi - you've some valuable insights there. Your hound is right - this question should give anyone a headache if they considered it with any amount of seriousness.
Will I be here tomorrow? Who knows? Poets appear to pop off at an alarming rate here..... Is MPS the Bermuda Triangle of poetry?

                        • orchidee

You may disappear into Sir Orchi NS's black hole - where he lives 99% of the time, spouting out rubbish! lol.

                          • Doggerel Dave

Having given this idea active consideration, I intend not to, and will take strenuous steps to avoid such a fate. Thank you anyway.

                            • orchidee

Who could bear me talking rubbish in a place from which there's no escape? lol.

                              • Doggerel Dave

Maybe someone who is not a conversationalist and relies on you to make the running.
Me, I'd be running too - in t'other direction, lol.
                                Over and out!

                                • orchidee

So you ARE here 'tomorrow'. Can you help me? I can never find tomorrow. When it gets here, it's always 'today'! Doh!

                                • Thomas W Case

                                  Excellent.

                                • MendedFences27

Dave, Dave, Dave, ones " bodily frame " is just housing for your brain, some place for it to reside and be cared for as best as is possible. "Consciousness" is a bio-chemical reaction within the human brain. They are not all alike (varying from happiness to total terror). The process is controlled by your DNA. Genes inherited from your ancestors. It took millennia of adaptations to beget the first conscious humans, and we may be on the road to unconsciousness. - Phil A.

                                  • Doggerel Dave

As above to Jerry, Phil. I get all of that. But for me these mechanistic explanations just don't hack it. The whole thing niggles at me in a quite frustrating way.
Good to hear from you though.

Your existence comes from within your mind Dave, it shows you the way to move forward from the experiences you have acquired from your past.

                                    Andy

                                    • Doggerel Dave

Good for you , Andy. If that is the way you choose to see it and that gives you a satisfactory answer, peace of mind is a valuable quality I wish I could experience sometimes.

                                    • Tristan Robert Lange

                                      God. 🤣

                                    • Tristan Robert Lange

Now, all jokes aside, is this a question that can even be answered satisfactorily? If one says God, the unbeliever will scoff and say 🙄, sure...of course. Not. Yet, if all that is answered is some sort of psychosocial response trying to explain the phenomenon, that won't be satisfactory either, because it fails to answer the why, let alone the what. So, for me, it's a mystery and I am comfortable with that. Sorry for my response above...but you set me up for it! 😂 I could not resist. Great, thought-provoking poem, my friend!

                                      • Doggerel Dave

Though I’m unsure about ‘can be’ I am certain re – has not been – satisfactorily answered by science.. And as mentioned to Soren up top, because the science stream of thought has so signally, (apart from a few feeble efforts) failed to arrive at any halfway satisfactory answers I have much sympathy with those who can rest with a belief in God. I wish sometimes (very very occasionally) I could, but alas….
Thanks Tristan for your time; as I’m sure you are aware, my four lines only note the problem and in no way attempt an answer.

And that is what I love about it, Dave. All we can do is pose the questions, point out the problems and let each find their truth. One can only do that for themselves as I see it. You are most welcome, my friend.

                                          • Doggerel Dave

I have a feeling we are both in furious agreement here..... It's just that I have this compulsion sometimes to convince....

                                            • Tristan Robert Lange

LOL! Yes, indeed. And no worries!

                                            • NafisaSB

the definition of consciousness is obviously going to vary from person to person - so some will point to God, some to ancestors, and some to science depending on their leaning and upbringing
for me, by the way, sorry, but though it is the first two am also considering the role science has to play..

                                              • Doggerel Dave

Because science, with all its difficulties, is where I'm at, my focus is on the monumental lack of any real answers for me to this, which I consider to be central to my existence. My comment was not a dismissal of religion, even though I'm atheistic agnostic, but merely to maintain attention on the science stream of thought. Because of what appears to be the unanswerable nature of my question or 'riddle' I have every sympathy with those who turn to religion, seek mechanistic/biochemical explanations or ignore it all together.
Glad to hear from you as usual. Take care.

                                                • NafisaSB

glad to hear from you too - you have raised an interesting question
you have definitely turned my attention to the scientific side - both my son and daughter are agnostic too - so each to his/her own
as for me, maybe because of my upbringing, I invariably turn to the Almighty for solutions - lol
