What is a poet?

sorenbarrett

A dreamer, a word schemer
A drifter on winds of thought, in a deep ink well of not
Held by reigns of paper chains
A believer a deceiver
A sooth, a teller of truth
Eyes that see, beauty in debris
One that sleeps, one that weeps
A vender of time, a mender of rhyme
A story teller, a giant feller, a hope seller
He rides upon sun rays, lives beyond days
A fisher of emotions on ink's dark oceans

How wonderful, I think in each and every poet, there is also a tragedy, whether it be an aching to be noticed as a writer or just tragedy of life, seems like anyone can be a poet but a good poet needs skill to show and tell, wisdom, reflective skills, narrative skills, and the inspiring button, a relatability and a human way of thinking in writing, a touch of magic with their muse and a non egotistic personality, that's just some of what makes a great poet. 🌹 And that my friend is only my humble reflections upon what is a good poet. 🌹 Wonderfully inspiring as usual 💜

This is a very interesting question. Poets in my opinion are visionaries. They see things and feel feelings that other don't see or feel.A comprehensive list of the qualities of Poets. Excellent read

The poem presents a profoundly uplifting exploration of what it means to be a poet, celebrating the transformative power of poetry to capture the depths of human emotion and experience. It delves into the dualities and complexities of the poetic experience, portraying the poet as both a visionary and a vulnerable soul —a believer in beauty and a resilient spirit who withers sorrow. The central idea revolves around the notion that poets possess a unique gift for navigating and articulating the complexities of the human heart, inspiring hope and empathy in others. The poet seems to aim to empower both poets and readers to tap into the profound impact that poetry can have on our lives, highlighting both the beauty and the transformative struggles inherent in the creative process. It serves to uplift and inspire both poets and readers to appreciate the depth of emotion and thought that poetry can convey, igniting a passion for the art form that can forever change us.

A fine write SB. erm, I'm not a typical poet - one who feeds sewage to KP; has a talking dog; is married to an old trout; etc. lol.

This poem beautifully captures the essence of a poet—dreamer, truth-seeker, and weaver of words. The imagery is vivid, painting the poet as both creator and explorer. A mesmerizing tribute to the soul of poetry.

Opting out from this one, as I'm not a poet - I, when I can, just write rhyming verse.
Thanks Soren for reminding me which tribe I belong to.

Some quotes on poets and poetry :
--Poetry, being elegance itself, cannot hope to achieve visibility. In that case, you ask me, of what use is it ? Of no use. Who will see it ? No one. Which does not prevent it from being an outrage to modesty, though its exhibitionism is squandered on the blind. It is enough for poetry to express a personal ethic, which can then break away in the form of a work. It insists on living its own life. It becomes the pretext for a thousand misunderstandings that go by the name of glory...
--Poetry is a religion without hope. The poet exhausts himself in its service, knowing that, in the long run, a masterpiece is nothing but the performance of a trained dog on very shaky ground.

--The worst tragedy for a poet is to be admired through being misunderstood.

--If a poet has a dream, it is not of becoming famous, but of being believed

--Such is the role of poetry. It unveils, in the strict sense of the word. It lays bare, under a light which shakes off torpor, the surprising things which surround us and which our senses record mechanically.
--Take a commonplace, clean it and polish it, light it so that it produces the same effect of youth and freshness and originality and spontaneity as it did originally, and you have done a poet’s job. The rest is literature.
                                        --Jean Cocteau (1889-1963)
