Habit or addiction

sorenbarrett

A habit not a vice, salt as a spice
A glass of wine with a meal, brings out the flavor of the veal
Cup of coffee to open eye's squint or with an after dinner mint
A cigar with friends, a prayer as day ends

Over a vice one has no control, avoiding withdrawal is its goal
Then what of water or food, they're a vice one must conclude
No, a vice is not good for you, something you must eschew
But what if coffee and cigars friends impart, isn't wine good for the heart?

so much controversy here. Wine coffee and cigars. Who can say for sure. Even the doctors can't agree on if alcohol is good for you or not. I guess the answer is "moderation". Too much of anything is probably bad.Certainly a thoughtful and well constructed poem.Had me smiling which I haven't done for years.

      • sorenbarrett

Thanks David your are right about the moderation issue and I had another verse about that as well as legal restrictions but poems are better if kept simpler. Thanks again for the read and comment it is appreciated

A very enjoyable read and that list probably could of been endless, they both cover many things and will be different to each person, certainly makes you wonder

Thanks Tobani I was going to release this the other day when you published yours but decided to wait a bit. I had other verses about moderation, violence, pharmaceutical regulation and who should have the say but said simplicity is far better in poetry. Thanks so much for the read and kind words of support.

            You are very welcome

Is life a habit and love an addiction ?

            • sorenbarrett

I guess by my definition it could be. Thanks so much Lorenz for your read and comment that is always thought provoking and most welcome.

I believe that if a social habit invades the privacy of your solitude, it becomes a problematic habit. On the other hand, I haven't seen my friends for a long time for this reason. Sometimes those confusing circles are worse than any kind of consumption. Thank you for sharing this text, a very important reflection for me. Regards.

Thanks so much Damaso I appreciate your read and comment a complicated subject that even experts argue over.

So right Dave, moderation in all things, I think. Thanks so much for the read and comment my friend

This poem makes us think about when something is simply a pleasure and when it turns into a problem. Well done!
