"the question"

“The Question”

What do I enjoy most?
It is not the finished page —
though it breathes back at me
like the tide kissing rock.

It is the weight of the pen,
its ink loosening thought
the way rain teases the dust awake.

It is the moment a phrase arrives unbidden,
like a shy bird alighting on an outstretched hand.
It is the quiet between heartbeats,
when the mind leans in and language,
at last, agrees to stay awhile.

It is the labour and the listening —
the long wrestle for a true word,
the surrender to its music,
and the knowing that even this
small thing can tether a soul to wonder.

Thereโ€™s a certain kind of writing that isnโ€™t about endings at all, but about the breath that happens in the middle of making something , the part where thought loosens, where sound and sense lean toward each other, and where the act of shaping words feels as alive as the thing being shaped. This piece lingers in that space, catching the quiet voltage between attention and arrival. Itโ€™s an invitation to listen in.

You have captured in words the moment and excitement of the hunt. It is not the trophy but the thrill of the tracking the tension of looking sensing not the trigger pull. This poem is so sensitive to the process and so well worded that it deserves a fave

Rik, this is beautiful. The imagery is alive...the shy bird, the rain teasing dust, the heartbeat pause. It reads like a meditation on the craft itself. Wonderful! ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›

Wow. Just WOW. How deliciously rendered with a waltzing rhythm and a wonderfully warm poignancy, not to mention exquisite imagery. I love, love, LOVE it! Thank you so very much for sharing.
