Kathleen

Goldfinch60

There’s that voice,

So pure,

So wonderful,

Taken from us before her time.

She takes the breath from me

Every time I hear

Those wonderful contralto tones.

The sound she makes

Is unmistakable,

And reaches my spirit

With absolute ease.

And when she sings “What is Life?”

I am so overwhelmed with emotion

That I can only listen

In total awe and incredulity

That a voice like hers existed.

So pure.

So wonderful.

So unique.

Taken from us before her time.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Kathleen Ferrier was an English contralto singer who died in 1953 aged 41. She is and always will be my favourite singer, I cannot normally name favourites in music as I like so much but Kathleen’s voice was a gift from the Gods.
