Housing Crisis

Doggerel Dave

I don’t know how it is in other lands,

But where I live it’s well and truly rigged;

Young and poor can’t satisfy their demands

For shelter which continue unfulfilled.

Housing’s form is a rampant free market;

(Prices result from supply and demand),

But if house prices should ever cark it

Pollie’s positions would be quickly tanned.

‘Roasted’ could also cover what I mean:

Pollies are aware that their government

Can be quite dependent on what is seen

By homeowners, who must remain content:

Property owners a demographic

Having more than considerable force

Whose support can be viewed as a magic

Way to keep Government in place and on course.

Here’s a strategy used to much acclaim:

Help provided to lower income buyers.

Various Government incentives are lame,

Fraudulent in fact, cooked up by shysters.

All this means is an increase in demand,

Subsequent increase in housing prices.

Happy days - for home owners so grand,

And sole purpose of these exercises.

Spot on - I would hate to be young trying to buy my first house - well observed DD

  • Doggerel Dave

Thanks Michael. (Have you blocked me? Very subtly done!🙃)

  • Goldfinch60

It is the same hear Dave, to try and buy a house nowadays is so hard.

Same racket? Thanks for your support.

Well said, your poem focuses on the housing crisis, the impact of free market dynamics on affordability, and the role of government in perpetuating inequities. It highlights the disparity between policy intentions and their actual impact on marginalized populations.

Thank ye for your time and output... Great summary I must admit...👍

      • Tristan Robert Lange

Dave, this is biting and brilliant. From shysters’ schemes to the roasting of pollies, you’ve captured the rigged nature of housing politics with clarity and force. And yes…it’s much the same here in the U.S. The game is tilted toward homeowners and developers, while lower-income buyers get promised “help” that only drives prices higher. Always appreciate your edge, my friend. 🌹🖤🙏🕯️🐦‍⬛

I really look forward to your appreciative commentaries, Tristan. They warm my insides.

The housing mess/racket/crisis is the subject of several of my posts here. But who's listening? I think I'm going to print one out, and pin it to the Prime Minister's front door..... always supposing I can get within five hundred yards of which ever of his properties he may currently reside........

          • Tristan Robert Lange

You are most welcome! I hear you there...good luck with the proximity...but I support the effort. 🤣

          • Paul Bell

            Supply and demand.
Cull the population, no housing demand.
Developers sitting on prime sites, governments complicit in allowing it.
Second homes in seaside towns. You can see why you can't get a house.

            • Doggerel Dave

Government policies keep prices artificially high in my book. Why? Idiots think they are sitting on real worth when their house is valued so high......

            • Poetic Licence

I would imagine this is an issue all over the world, if you are young now it's practically impossible to be able to buy your first property, but it is even more expensive renting, we have more people still living at home in their adulthood than ever before. We hav a property shortage on all levels, but especially what they call affordable housing , which in my are starts at 350,000 pounds, how is that affordable, will leave it there. Valid write should be said about this

              • Doggerel Dave

So it is now called 'affordable housing' there too? What ever happened to the good old Council House or Public Housing?

                • Poetic Licence

We have housing association's but they have limited property, not many of those are built anymore. In some areas tye free housing is bought up by large landlords to put on the rental market, we also have thousands of asylum seekers who are being prioritized on the council housing lists. It's not a good picture at all, and there is no quick and easy fix

                  • Doggerel Dave

I't's shit, and makes me so angry.

                  • Neville

I'm betting its pretty much the same everywhere mate .. 👍👍

                    • Doggerel Dave

Seems so, Neville (Tobani above covered the UK; Tristan confirms for the US). Thanks for the read.
