Choices

sorenbarrett

If you could be loved completely by only one person for a lifetime or remembered by all humanity for all time which would you choose?
If you had the power to save only one person who would you save?
And if you could only save them by sacrificing everyone else would you?
Looking at the people you love, would you really want to know all their deepest secrets?
Would you choose to close your eyes to sadness and be insane or open them to the horrors of sanity?
Would you take a long and arduous road, seeing all of nature's beauty or a short easy one seeing nothing but the waste of a landfill?
Would you rather live an eternity of pain or a second of joy?
You have already made these choices in your heart and mind
They can be told by your actions

Good write SB. Well, to choose one person - KP's at the bottom of the list, so I could start from the bottom up. lol.
Is that a phrase we don't hear every day 'start from the bottom up'. lol.

    • sorenbarrett

Thanks so much for the read Orchi it is appreciated. It is politically incorrect to mention the word bottom, it is either taken as sexual harassment or making a class distinction and since we are all there anyway it becomes redundant to say it when referring to someone.

      • orchidee

There is the phrase 'working top-down'. The opposite is 'working bottom-up' I think. Doh! KP's botty is elephant-size. lol.

            Welcome .

          • Mutley Ravishes

I remember reading somewhere that the only free will we have is choice. Great write, Soren!

            • sorenbarrett

Thanks Mutley for the review and words of encouragement they are most appreciated

            • Paul Bell

Tough one, blood is always thicker than water.
I think you would always save the child, mostly.
I suppose some choices are instant, and possibly life changing, some more selfish.
Humans will encounter all sorts of choices through their lives, and most will allow others to make that choice for them, probably regretting it in the process.
A real thinking poem this one.

              • sorenbarrett

Thank you Paul for the review. Each has their own answer the mother that takes the child over the father, the father that takes his wife over the child, the child that takes the dog before his friend. We are who we are

Over the course of 40 years, I have been fortunate enough to receive unwavering devotion from one person, allowing me to understand the depth of being completely loved.
The use of rhetorical questions! Your poem revolves around the nature of human decisions and the moral dilemmas that accompany them. It explores the contrasts between love and legacy, sacrifice and self-preservation, and the complex relationship between happiness and suffering. The poet delves into existential questions about the significance of the choices we make in our lives and how they reflect our values and beliefs.

                • sorenbarrett

Thank you Friendship you have hit it head on and seen the meaning of the poem. Questions that hopefully none of us have to make but that define who we are. Appreciate it my friend

Well I defiantly would want the love of one person. No need to be remembered forever. I long to bring many closed loved on es back howewver I would not sacrifice others to do so. And iknowing all of someone secrets would be boring,. What would you have to talk about? Love your thought process here. Makes one think. Thanks for the great read.

                  • sorenbarrett

Thank you so much for your read and comment I do very much appreciate your support. Yes there is no right or wrong answer to any of them but they do say a lot about the person in how they respond.

                  • Allie561

This was a very good piece Soren. It reminds me of the moral hypothesis like the train where you have only the choice to switch the track. I myself like to think I could sacrifice myself but if it ever came down to that I’m not sure if I would be able to go through with it.

                    • sorenbarrett

Thank you so much for your read and comment Allie yes what we say and what we really do are at times different. It is important at times to ask ourselves what our values are.

I have to admit I'm a bit of a realist and philosophical questions rarely cross my mind. A great write however and it certainly got me thinking.

It's more useful to know the deepest secrets of people you dislike...

                    • Jerry Reynolds

                      A fine write, Sorenbarrett.

                    • Katie B.

                      Excellent! Most thought provoking!!

                    • Goldfinch60

Fine words soren, I have been lucky in that I had the love of my life for 38 years before she passed into heaven and then Mary came into my life which has given me another love of my life.
