Evening Prayer

orchidee

Tune: Tallis' Canon

('Glory to thee, my God this night')

Psalm 4 v.4-8

*********

Stand in awe, and sin not, commune

With your own heart and be in tune

Upon your bed, and be still when

Sleep's hour comes, be peaceful then

Offer the sacrifices sure

Of righteousness, let them be pure

Aput you trust in the Lord here

Sense too His mighty presence near

There be many that say, Who will

Show us any good, for shall ill

Continue on for evermore?

Lord come to us, and us assure

Lift up light of your countenance

Upon us, so we gladdened hence

Glad in heart more than harvest joy

When men their labours do employ

I will both lay me down in peace

And sleep, for you shall me release

From fears, for it is you only

O Lord, makes me dwell in safety

The shortness of each line together with the AA BB rhyme scheme gave this gave a very rapid and coherent feel to this hymn Orchi. loved this one

Thank you SB. There's been shorter lines - some only 4, 5, or 6 syllables.

I do count syllables but it is prioritized behind message and rhyme in most of my poems, maybe that is why they are not as good as I would like them to be. They are off beat, maybe that is just me I have always been told that I am off beat.

Nostalgia - the first stanza is reminiscent of a prayer I was taught when very very young..
        Thanks Orchi.

Beautifully said. The bedtime prayer my father used to recite, 'Thank you for sharing,' brought back fond memories for me.
