Habit

sorenbarrett

Addiction an affliction that we all have got
Not just a drug or a hug that we bought
We can't elude, air, water and food, we'd die without the lot
Aren't these addictions, contradictions society forgot

Too much food, can be viewed as a disgrace
But a moderate amount, you can count necessary to hold your health in place
Without a drink we would be on the brink of the end of the human race
What despair, to be without air, all life you would erase

Moderation the key for felicity, nothing in excess
Alcohol a smoke, taking a toke will not end in distress
It's when as a crutch you use too much a problem you possess
You pay the toll when you loose control, a habit you must confess

moderation has always bored me, good write my friend

Good for you, Soren. The therapeutic window should always be considered when one engages in any activity but more specifically when any substance is allowed past one's bodily boundaries. Well writ.

Thanks so much my friend it means a lot coming from you Dave hope you are doing well

This poem makes one think that habits can become harmful only when it becomes escape. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

Thank you so much for the review my friend yes I have been perplexed at the definitions that people apply to addiction. From professional definitions to those of the common man it seems that the definer makes the definition fit their needs not the user. One drink and an alcoholic, one toke and a drug fiend. They refuse to see that they too are addicts under this definition to other things. My opinion is addiction is only a case when it is harmful to the one or those around them and they no longer have control to stop it.

        • arqios

I do agree with that view thanks Soren ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

Well said. Your poem explores the concept of addiction in its various forms, emphasizing that not all addictions are negative and that moderation is essential for a balanced life.

Thereโ€™s a clever tension here between the things we must depend onโ€”air, water, foodโ€”and the things that can quietly become destructive when dependence turns into excess, with the repeated rhymes giving it a steady, almost spoken-word rhythm. The strongest idea is the final distinction: the problem isnโ€™t necessarily the substance itself, but when we turn it into a crutch and โ€œloose control,โ€ because thatโ€™s where ordinary human need crosses the line into addiction.

Thank you my friend for your review. I have been waiting for yours and it is most important to me give all you have written about alcohol or tobacco and I was most curious as to how you would see this. I am most heartened to see you see it as I do. As a professional that has delt with many that have addiction problems my diagnosis did not always meet with family or even other professional expectations. It is much as yours it is when looses control and it is harmful to them or others close around them. I appreciate your input

Good write SB. Should first line be 'addiction'? Though it could be 'addition', as addition, too much of anything, leads to addiction.

              • sorenbarrett

Ah my good friend you have caught me with my pants down. So right you are and it is appreciated. Nice to know someone reads these things. Thanks so much

                • orchidee

As I say, it could equally be 'addition', as a psychological insight into addiction! Not psychology, say Fido to me. You've not enough brain cells for much of that. lol.

                  • sorenbarrett

Orchi you sly old fox you play the game well. You have all these people thinking you have two brain cell when you are one of the smartest on the site. My wife told me everyone loves a fool and the court jester was the smartest man in the kingdom. And everyone loves ya. Thanks for the read my friend

Insightful poem, Soren! You broaden the subject beyond its usual boundaries and bring it back to our relationship with appetite itself. My own experience has shown me how personal that dividing line can be. Terrific food for thought, my friend! ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿฆโ€โฌ›

                        Hi Sorenbarret,

I really enjoyed this. It made me think of this line by some famous poet ๐Ÿ˜‚

โ€œThe road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.โ€

I think that saying is a bunch of bullshit myself though. There's too much to lose.

                        Nicely written.

                        - Syd ๐Ÿ„

I used to watch the programme, My 600 pounds life, and I was always amazed that a human could get to that weight.
I then realised what i'd drank through my life probably equated to that.
You pinpoint it perfectly, we're all addicted to something, and in moderation it isn't a problem.
But when the addiction takes hold we know the consequences.

                          • sorenbarrett

Thank you Paul for the read and comment it is deeply appreciated.

Yes we are all addicted to something or other.
Even in Moderation. Even People who are Shut-off from Society, have some Rituals.
                            A good Write again.
