WINDMILLS OF MY MIND

BRIAN & ANGELA

What has happened to real Windmills

I googled WINDMILL and got this picture

Three armed aliens marching in from the sea !

Windmills in the sea ? That's surrealist - absurd

Real Windmills had a rustic and timeless beauty

Harnessed in solid oak or British brick and stone

Housing all the Heath Robinson grinding machinery !

The sails were majestic - forty feet in diameter

Whooshing and swooshing in the willing wind.

They stood on a hill - to catch the wind - Proud

Quixotic essentials of the English countryside

Where many of them still stand - silent and subdued.

Ironically it was steam and electricity that silenced them.

The suddenly - overnight - something new and futuristic

Appeared on the skyline - everywhere - not WINDMILLS

But WIND TURBINES - Metallic - Mesmeric - Menacing !

For what purpose ?  Not a millstone or grain of corn in sight.

Ironically they are dynamos designed to produce electricity

The convenient form of energy that had made Windmills obsolete !

  • Comment from author about the poem: Personally I lament the passing of something as iconic as the old fashioned sail windmill. Some have been full restored and still produce "stone ground flour". Also there are many working Mills in Holland ! I'm a Scientist and reluctantly I must admit (as shown in my picture) there is a science fiction elegance about "Wind Turbines in the Sunset". The NIMBY's (not in my backyard !) find them ugly and blot on the landscape ! Spare a thought for New Zealand which is a Nuclear Free Zone and consequently it i now covered from North to South in Wind Turbines ! TENGATA WHENUA refers to the Maori Nation in New Zealand and they dont like the intrusion of "Big Propellor Monsters" on sacred Moari Sites ! What do you think about WIND TURBINES - ugly or elegant ? I am pretty sure that I saw Windmills yesterday in Rotterdam.
And the funny thing is that a couple from New Zealand/ Australia chose to make Rotterdam their new Homeland, with the guy studying "Urban Development" at the local Uni.
Your theme is very interesting and there are some nice 'touches' in it.
    Lovely photo.

Thanks LYSISTRATA - pleased you liked the photo and the poem ! Yes there are still lots of Wndmills in Holland - some still working and some just for tourists. Love to visit Holland lovely people and lovely food ! Because NZ is a Nuclear Free Country they have to use wind power but the Maoris don't like the Wind Turbines on their sacred sites because of the noise which upsets the Spirits ! Yours - Brian.

Thanks for sharing Brian! I'm all for Wind Turbine technology. Anything that produces energy without ravaging the earth. Green energy! The earth offers plenty of opportunities to produce clean energy if we take advantage.

YES DD - They are modernistically beautiful and as you say very GREEN. The problem is the same people who are moaning about the SIZEWELL NUCLEAR POWER STATION in Suffolk are also moaning about the "visual pollution" of the off-shore wind turbines ! These hypocrites drive 4 x 4 gas guzzlers and have all electric houses ! Thanks for your comment BRIAN

I especially like the comparison to 'three armed aliens marching in from the sea.
