To Those Who Came Before Us

SheWasTheSun

You may think I’m tweeting

But I’m actually taking over the world

You may think I’m taking a selfie

But I’m really learning to love myself

We’re not mindless little dolls

We’re intelligent and passionate

Free spirits, deep thinkers

We are complex minds with the power

To keep up with an ever-changing world

As it speeds up and moves up

As every little detail changes

With the click of a button

Or the tap of a finger

You say we have no grit

No values, no work ethic

But the truth is we don’t sleep

Because we lay awake all night dreaming

Dreaming with our eyes open

Open to new ideas

And new definitions for words

Words like beauty, love, and gender

And all of the things that make us

Exactly who we are

Because none of us are the same

That’s what makes us different from you

We celebrate diversity

Not only blacks and whites

But blue hair and tattooed skin

Men, women, gender fluids

Because we’re all fluid

Fluid in our thoughts, fluid in our movements

Movements straight to the top

The truth is, we have all those values

That you think the cell phones stole from us

The hard work, the effort, the problem solving

It’s all there in each of us

But it’s there, along with something else

Along with the courage to spread our truth

We’re not afraid to stand up to the bullies

Or the ones who say “You can’t”

We have the guts to say no

To the hands that threaten to choke us

And stifle our voices

We won’t stop

Until everyone has that voice

Until everyone has the chance to say

“I am human too”

And if you disagree

Feel free to let us know

Send us a text

And we’ll try to get back to you

  • Comment from author about the poem: I posted this poem about a week ago and deleted it because I didn't like it. After everything that happened last weekend, I rethought it, revised it a bit, and now I think it's important to post it. This world is a scary place and my generation is just entering it. We are brave, strong, and open minded. If anyone can make a change, it's us.

I liked this, I correct me if I'm wrong but was the ending symbolic of the way technology is prevalent in this generation?

    • SheWasTheSun

Thank you! Yes, I changed the ending a few times but I settled on this one because technology is one of the biggest things that separates us from past generations.

THANKS MY FRIEND ~ For a very elegant "free verse" poem in just one fast flowing stanza. I can understand why you deleted ~ revised ~ reposted (I do that too !) because generational critique can be hurtful ! I'm 33 but because I was born after 1980 I was schooled in the digital age. In the UK the percentage of people who don't text or surf the web increases with age. Many people of 75+ are not computer literate. This is a great problem educationalwise because they can't get out to classes and cant access programmes like FUTURE LEARN on line. Because of "TECHNOLOGY" everyone in the whole world is increasingly "born equal". No need for personal libraries or access to education ~ its all on line. Brother GOOGLE enables us to know everything all the time. Today's Teens have more access to "know how" than any previous generation. Please use it wisely ! Many sacred cows (in education & society) are now obsolete but the over-50's are still very reluctant to let go. The World is still run by the 50+ TRUMP & HILLARY are both 70+ but maybe they are exceptional???? Thanks for caring and sharing ~ Yours BRIAN
