The Flaws Of Education

Liam Lawless

Sleepily and stubborn we awake in early hours,

Despite snow rain or storm, we must be tough,

We march to our schools,

Told you’re not good enough, not clever enough,

Your hope and spirit removed,

School is rough.

In school individuality is removed,

You must all look the same,

From your hair to your shoes,

You are commanded what to do,

And no matter how difficult,

You must do it on cue,

School is tedious.

Work is given in school for home and in holiday,

No matter hour, day or occasion,

It disturbs sleep, family and play,

Friends are forgotten and hobbies are given up,

School criticizes what we do,

From relationships to make up,

And if our work isn’t good enough we must start anew,

School is tough.

Each day gets longer,

Each lesson gets harder,

Each teacher gets harsher,

Test scores dampen hope,

And when exams come we cannot cope,

Stress levels rise,

No matter how hard we try,

Tears fill our eyes,

Yet school still fills us with lies.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I know a lot of people say "its school you just have to get on with it" but many teenagers get depression from going to school so i wish to help gain recognition that the educational system shouldn't be as difficult and be teaching pointless subjects when real issues need to be taught.

Yes I agree with you. I think your poem is wonderful. I have a teen that would probably agree with this! I know I do. Great job. Keep writing!

WELCOME ANON ~ Great first POEM thans for sharing. In the UK we have some FREE SCHOOLS ! No uniform ~ no fixed curriculum ~ no exams ~ AMEN. It is expecially for the Children whose Parents are FREE THINKERS. In essence the best SCHOOL is the COMMUNITY and the ENVIRONMENT. For many kids their best (and most creative) years are wasted and stiffed in STATE SCHOOLS ! Yours BRIAN In one class a Teacher was showing slides of RAINBOWS when there was a eeal one outside the blacked out window. Anoher tine a 13 year old boy was caned and sent home for bringing his PET SNAKE to School ~ great opportunity for SHOW & TELL missed ! The school has a stuffed SNAKE ! Stuff the Cuurrulum ~ Yours B

Many times have I resented schooling pressures and this poem highlights the trials and cumbersome schooling features in a superb freeverse. And then there is the prejudiced teachers bias that I could add as a vice as well as bullying. So kudos poet for a sociological poem.

Pls do comment out my latest poem too. I'm a new poet here but have been writing poetry since years and readers enjoyed it elsewhere until I found this site and wish to make new poem pals.
